2025 was a strong year for automobile sales in the United States. Over 16 million vehicles were sold, the most in a year since 2019. But a few top car brands had even better years than the rest. Here’s a look at the automakers that led the way in 2025 and what made their years such huge successes.
Kia

Kia may not have sold the most new vehicles in 2025 (more on that next), but that didn’t stop the Korean manufacturer from having a phenomenal year. Kia sold over 800,000 vehicles in a year in the U.S. for the first time ever, punctuating how prevalent the overseas brand has become in this country since first entering the U.S. market in 1992. What’s most impressive is that 2025 was the eighth consecutive year the brand broke its all-time sales record.

General Motors

Now we get to the company leading the way in auto sales. GM (which is made up of several smaller brands, including Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac) sold a whopping 2.85 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2025. That was a six percent increase year-over-year, with the company selling nearly a million pickup trucks alone. According to GM, this was the company’s 51st consecutive year as the leading seller of full-size SUVs— the type of market dominance most companies can only dream of.

Ford

Trailing behind GM was Ford— but not by much. While Ford does not have quite as expansive a portfolio as GM, the auto manufacturer was still able to sell over 2 million cars in the U.S. in 2025. This last year, Ford sold more hybrid trucks than any other company in the world while also boasting the bestselling three-row SUV (the Ford Explorer) and the bestselling van (the Ford Pro Transit Van).

Hyundai

Kia’s sister company, Hyundai, also had a noteworthy year, selling close to one million total vehicles. While many dealerships saw significant sales slowdowns at the end of the year, Hyundai had its best-ever December. Hyundai’s sales of hybrid vehicles alone increased by 71 percent in December, setting a new all-time monthly record for the company.

Toyota

Not to be outdone by its fellow Japanese auto manufacturers, Toyota actually sold more total units than both Kia and Hyundai combined. A large chunk of those sales came from Toyota’s “electrified lineup”, which saw a nearly 20 percent increase in sales year-over-year. One of its most popular offerings, the Toyota Camry, became exclusively hybrid in 2025. This decision clearly did not harm the car’s reputation, as the Camry sold over 300,000 models in 2025 alone.
