The Most Popular U.S. Car Color Won’t Surprise You, But the Least Popular Might

Whether you’re shopping for a new car or just noticing trends on the road, paying attention to car colors in U.S. can be an interesting pastime. Edmunds recently released a report detailing the most and least popular car colors by state, as well as listing the national top five. So take your bets now and then check to see if you were correct.

According to their report, Edmunds looked at data from 2024. Their statistics don’t include every single car; rather, “vehicles included in the data set are exclusively retail registrations to individuals and do not include rental sales or registrations from government bodies.”

This is likely because individuals may be more open to non-standard colors, and the data set could have been too heavily skewed towards the basic white, gray and black colors that adorn many fleet vehicles. Also, in order to narrow down the color trends to just 2024, “only new vehicle registrations were included.”

Most Popular Car Colors in the U.S.

Across the board, the most popular car color was white, with 25% of all new individual registrations reporting that color. The other most common colors were black, at 22%; gray, at 20%; silver, coming in at 14%; and blue, rounding out the top five, at 9%.

The study also unveiled the most popular color by state, and there, it’s pretty heavily weighted towards white. 33 states reported that white was the most popular car color overall. Hawaii was the only state to report that gray was its number one color. And in the remaining 16 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico, black was the most common.

The other top four colors in each state mostly stayed true to the national top colors, with a few exceptions. In the case of the following states, red was included in the top five colors rather than blue:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Arizona
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

Least Popular Car Colors in the U.S.

Sure, the most popular car colors may have been a bit predictable, but what about the least popular colors? Again, there’s a fairly broad consensus across the country. In most of the states, the least popular colors were brown, orange, yellow, gold, and purple. But in a few states, there was another color or two that shook up the rankings.

In seven states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, green was one of the least popular colors. It edged out purple in Hawaii, Nevada, and Tennessee. In South Dakota and Wyoming, it replaced yellow. Mississippi had green instead of brown. And in Utah and Washington, D.C., green replaced gold as one of the least popular colors.

Puerto Rico was somewhat of an outlier overall. Four of it’s least popular colors matched the rest of the U.S.-green, brown, orange, and yellow. But it’s fifth least popular color, making up 6% of new individual registrations, was red.
