Ford Recalls Almost 273,000 Vehicles Over Rollaway Risk

When it comes to recalls, rollaway risks are particularly terrifying. While they may not have the same gravity as engine fires, the thought of being unable to put your car in park and being at the mercy of the road is still incredibly scary. Unfortunately for some Ford owners, that situation is not hypothetical. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that hundreds of thousands of Ford vehicles are subject to a recall due to a rollaway risk. Find out if yours is on the list and what you can do to keep yourself safe.

Why Is Ford Recalling So Many Vehicles?

According to the NHTSA brief, the Ford vehicles in question pose a risk of rolling away. The issue arises during parking. The report explains that “the integrated park module may fail to lock into the park position when the driver shifts into park.” When this happens, it “can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The NHTSA warns that because of this, “these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, ‘Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention.'”

Which Ford Vehicles Have this Issue?

The recall brief says that nearly 273,000 Ford vehicles pose a rollaway risk, including the:

• 2022 F-150 Lightning BEV
• 2023 F-150 Lightning BEV
• 2024 F-150 Lightning BEV
• 2025 F-150 Lightning BEV
• 2026 F-150 Lightning BEV
• 2024 Mustang Mach-E
• 2025 Mustang Mach-E
• 2026 Mustang Mach-E
• 2025 Maverick
• 2026 Maverick

If you’re unsure whether or not your vehicle has this issue, keep an eye on your mailbox. Ford will be sending out a first round of letters to owners in early February 2026. The company will send out a second round of letters “once the final remedy is available, anticipated in February 2026.” Starting January 26, 2026, you can also search your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA site to see if your vehicle is included in this recall.

How Will Ford Fix the Rollaway Risk?

According to Ford, “the park module software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge.” Prioritize getting this repair as soon as it’s available to you. A vehicle that doesn’t actually park is both a danger and a liability. For your own sake as well as the sake of those around you, take this recall seriously.
