Choosing a Gas Stove

Is your old gas stove on the blink or is it just time for a major kitchen appliance upgrade? There’s no denying the stove is a fundamental part of any kitchen and worthy of extra time to carefully research options.

“When it comes to identifying the best choice for your home, there’s a lot to consider,” says Ron Shimek, President, Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company. ‘Whether you’re ready to spend anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of dollars on a new gas stove, doing your homework up front is very important.”

We asked Shimek along with Edward McFarlane, Strategic Advisor at HomeX to help us get down to the gas stove nitty-gritty. These are the key features they suggest you consider when comparing gas stoves:

Style

Do you prefer stainless steel over smudge-resistant enamel or want to make a bold statement? There are dozens of of designer colors, retro styles and metallic accents to choose from right now.

Along with design elements, types of stoves include freestanding (finished sides so it can stand on its own) and slide-in or drop-in models (installed between countertops). Professional type ranges are usually freestanding but normally have controls on the front of the appliance.

Btus

Btu (British thermal unit) tells us how hot burners get. “An average range has a simmer burner of about 5,000 Btu and two medium burners of around 10,000 Btu and a large burner of 13,000 Btu or so”, says Shimek.

Natural gas, propane or dual-fuel

“Natural gas is typically cheaper than propane,” says McFarlane. He also points out that you don’t have to be constrained to a stove or range that is entirely gas. “If you are specifically looking for a gas range, there are dual-fuel stoves available where the top burners are gas and the oven is electric, which allows for a more constant temperature range for baking,”

Size

Consider the dimension of the stove based on the space in your kitchen, as well as the number of people in your household. “If you have more than one or two people, says McFarlane, “you may benefit from installing a stove with four or more burners.”

Oven type

Convection (fans to circulate heated air), double ovens, air-fryers and variable broilers are some of the oven options to consider.

Smart

Connect to WiFi and control the stove by voice command (using a home assistant) by downloading an app on your smartphone or syncing with home assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Cost

Although gas stoves cost about the same as electric models initially, gas is typically cheaper to operate (depending on utility rates in your area).

As for gas stove prices, they can run the gamut. For a good-value stove expect to pay between $500 and $1,000; $1,000 to $2,500 if you’re looking for extra features, like double convection ovens and air fryers. Stoves that cost between $2,500 to $5,000 usually come with a lot more bells and whistles or custom options. Chef-level, professional models can cost $5,000 and up.

Bring one of these stoves home and you’ll soon be cooking with gas!
