If you’ve closely examined your cellular device you may notice that there are some holes all along the sides of your phone. Given that cellphone designs have changed quite a bit over the years, you may find yourself wondering what exactly these holes are. We looked at three of the most popular smart phones to find out what exactly those holes are for. So whether you have an iPhone, a Samsung or a Pixel, you’ll be able to say with confidence that you know how your device works.
SIM Card Slot
One of the main holes people wonder about on their phones is the SIM card slot. Although newer phone models are starting to incorporate electronic SIMs, most of the models on the market still have a physical card. This card is what ties your phone number to the device. If you want to use your phone abroad and avoid roaming fees, for example, you’re generally best served by getting a local SIM card and swapping it out with your American one.
On iPhones with physical SIM cards, this slot is on the side. You’ll notice a small panel with a tiny hole in it. If you push the SIM card slot opener tool (or a pin) into it, the tray will pop open and you can remove the SIM.
Samsung has moved the location of the SIM card slot over the years. According to community forums, the slot used to be at the top but now those holes are “microphones for ambient noise cancellation.” On the Galaxy S21 series, the SIM card slot is now at the bottom, but beware: It’s located next to other noise cancelling microphones, so exercise caution if you’re looking to open that slot.
In the Google Pixel, the SIM card slot has been on the bottom since the 9 came out in mid-2024. Prior to that, it was located along the side of the device.
Speakers and Microphones
Many of the other holes in your phone that line the perimeter are speakers and microphones. On newer iPhones, ones that no longer have a dedicated headphone jack, the speaker and microphone holes along the bottom surround the USB-C charging port. The same is true of newer Pixels and Samsung Galaxies. Whether you’re playing music or making a call, those holes are working to enhance your auditory experience.
