Introducing scents into your car is nothing new. While some owners strive to preserve that new car smell, others opt for air fresheners in their favorite scents. Typically, we think of minty trees dangling from the rearview mirror, but one automotive maker is switching things up. Kia is debuting new electric vehicles (EVs) that come with gasoline and oil-scented air fresheners.
Why Did Kia Make These Air Fresheners?

According to Automotive News Europe, “Astara Auto Finland, which imports Kias into the Nordic country, developed a gasoline-scented car air freshener that it will give as a gift to buyers of the new EV4.” Per a translated post on Kia Finland’s Instagram account, the air fresheners are “a quick help for a permanent change in driving habits.” Their reel goes on to say that “a gasoline-scented air freshener relieves acute withdrawal symptoms during the transition from a combustion engine to electricity.”
It seems that Kia anticipated that its customers might want something familiar to encourage them to try out the new EV vehicles, and the brand opted to go for its own tongue-in-cheek version of aromatherapy. The marketing strategy has certainly created a buzz. Some people like the scent of gasoline and oil, while others abhor it, so creating an air freshener with this scent is a great way to get people talking about the product and the new vehicles.
Which Kia EVs Have These Air Fresheners?
The Kia Finland Instagram account says that there is “limited stock available for a limited time for buyers of the new Kia EV4.” At the moment, those cars are not available in the United States. If you want to experience this scent for yourself, you’ll have to figure out a way to get one of these from Finland.
Have Any Other Automotive Brands Done This?
Kia isn’t the first automotive maker to try this technique. Last year, UT Health San Antonio reported that Ford was also debuting a “car fragrance” with a gasoline-like scent to try to tempt its customers to buy the new EVs. It seems that both of these brands think that by appealing to their customers’ noses, they can sway them away from traditional gas-powered cars and instead towards the future of driving: electric vehicles.
