While car insurance isn’t legally required in every single state, it is a requirement in most. And even if you don’t have to carry a policy in order to register your vehicle, it’s still a good idea to have one. You never know what might happen on the road. But not all policies cost the same, and there are several factors that go into setting the price of your car insurance.
Forbes recently released a report detailing which cars are the least and most expensive to insure. Let’s take a look at the lists.
Least Expensive Cars to Insure
The Forbes report looked at popular 2021 models to see how cheap or expensive different models were to insure in 2025. According to them, the least expensive vehicles (organized from cheapest to priciest) were the:
- Honda CR-V LX
- Jeep Wrangler JL Sport
- Subaru Crosstrek
- Subaru Forester 2.5I
- Hyundai Tuscon SE
- Jeep Compass Latitude
- Chevrolet Equinox L
- Ford Escape S
- Volkswagen Tiguan SE
- Ford F-150 XL
Most Expensive Cars to Insure
On the flip side of things, Forbes also looked at the most expensive vehicles to insure. Again, they looked at the same list of popular 2021 models to maintain the age of the cars consistently and ensure that the only variable was the type of car. They found that the most expensive cars to insure, organized from cheapest to priciest, were the:
- Lexus NX 300h
- Dodge Ram 1500 Rebel
- Lexus RX 350
- Nissan Altima 2.0 S
- Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus
- Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription
- Lexus ES 300H
- Tesla Model S Performance
Car Insurance Pricing
We’ve covered the rising prices of car insurance before. There are several factors that go into determining your insurance premium. Some of them are variables you can change, while others are simply out of your control. The industry looks to things like accident rates, processing times and the cost of parts and labor when setting up their array of premiums.
Then they look to you. Things like your age and marital status, as well as your driving record, can raise or lower your rates. A married woman in her 40s with no history of car accidents will most likely have a far cheaper rate than an unmarried 19-year-old man who recently got into a fender bender.
Those types of factors are harder to control. Accidents aren’t always your fault, and while you could opt to get married simply for cheaper car insurance, we don’t recommend that. But the biggest factor that you do have control over is the type of vehicle you drive. All other things equal, your vehicle will have the most noticeable impact on your car insurance premiums.
