Cozy season is finally upon us! But as excited as we are to grab a cup of hot chocolate and wrap ourselves in a cozy blanket, we’re less than thrilled about turning on our home thermostat. The good news is that the Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool will keep you nice and toasty without running up your heating bill.
That said, you shouldn’t expect a space heater to heat your entire home. “A space heater is a supplement heat,” says Sergey Nikolin, electrician and President at Product Air Heating & Cooling LLC. “Use it to add a bit more warmth but not to replace your home’s main heating system. And the key thing is to be in the same room with the heater.”
We tested 12 models and found that the Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool is one of the safest space heaters you can buy. Better yet, it also functions as a cooling fan and air purifier so you can use it all year long. Here’s everything you need to know about the Dyson space heater.

We Tried It
Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool
The Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool functions as a space heater, cooling fan and air purifier all in one.
What is the Dyson Space Heater?
The Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool functions as a space heater, cooling fan and air purifier all in one. It features an advanced HEPA H13 filtration system that captures 99.97% of ultra-fine pollutants including allergens, bacteria, viruses, pollen and mold spores. The air purifier automatically works during heating and cooling but can also be activated on its own without blowing any hot or cold air. It has 10 speed settings as well as auto mode which detects air quality and adjusts the fan speed accordingly.
Unlike traditional space heaters, the Dyson space heater uses innovative Air Multiplier technology. “This works by drawing air in through a powerful yet quiet motor. The air is then accelerated through an annular aperture, creating a jet of air that flows over an airfoil-shaped ramp,” explains Dyson Design Engineer Logan Thomson. “Air Multiplier technology not only ensures even and consistent heating but also eliminates the buffeting caused by conventional fan blades.”
This Dyson space heater comes with a remote control that allows you to control the mode, room temperature, oscillation, air flow and direction. You can also set a sleep timer or put it on night mode.
When it comes to safety, it doesn’t get much better than a Dyson. Thomson explains that Dyson space heaters have self-regulating heating elements, as well as cut-out switches in case of overheating or tipping over. “Additionally, there are no fast or loud spinning blades and no visible heating elements,” he says.
How We Tested It
Our product testing team ran a total of 12 space heaters in rooms ranging from 169 to 196 square feet. They paid special attention to each unit’s safety features, size and price point. Product tester Dylan Fischer was impressed with the Dyson space heater right from the start.
“The addition of an air purifier with this model is pretty great. The LED screen displays the current air quality, and you can even set it to function solely in purifier mode,” he says. “It looks and feels nice, which is to be expected from Dyson, and is very easy to plug in and turn on.”
When heating a room, the Dyson automatically detects the temperature in the room and sets the heat to adjust to a couple degrees higher. Once the desired temperature is reached, the unit pauses. At the highest setting (99 degrees Fahrenheit), Dylan notes that the heat really didn’t feel that hot.
“It’s hotter up close but drops significantly as you take a step or two away from the heater. A bit disappointing in that sense,” he says. “But overall, this model performed much better than the original Dyson Hot + Cool (without the purifier). I found my entire room warming up more with this one.” Dylan also notes that after use, the machine itself doesn’t get hot. “Most of the machine is cool to the touch, except for the interior of the ring,” he explains. “Even that cooled off pretty quickly after a minute or two.”
The only thing Dylan wasn’t crazy about was the remote. Though it worked fine, he found that he had to be pretty close to the unit in order for it to work. “Expect a bit of hassle trying to get it to work from across the room. And obviously, it doesn’t work well with furniture in the way,” he says.
Overall, Dylan dubs this a great machine for smaller spaces. “Similar to the other Dyson, this one unfortunately has a weak fan. However, if you’re planning on using it in a smaller setting for more direct heat, you will find a lot to like with this model,” he raves.
Long-Term Update
I live in the Northeast and my state has some of the highest electric and heating rates in the country. As a result, I wait as long as I can before turning on the heat. And even then, I only run the heat on one floor at a time. This helps keep costs down, but putting my baby in a chilly upstairs bedroom for nap time wasn’t ideal. I got this Dyson space heater for her bedroom to ensure that her bedroom was comfortable during her daytime naps.
I have been using it for three years now and can’t recommend it enough. In the fall and winter months, I turn it on about an hour or two before my daughter’s nap time. By the time she goes down for her nap, her bedroom is the perfect temperature. In the warmer months, I let the fan run to keep her cool.
The air purifier function has also proven especially beneficial over the past year. We’ve been doing a lot of home renovations and with the dust and fumes that accompany various projects, I love knowing that my daughter is breathing fresh air while she sleeps. The only thing I don’t like is having to replace the filter every year. To be honest, I’m terrible at remembering to do it and always go past the one-year mark. And when I do, it costs me $80. However, this Dyson space heater has been helpful in so many ways over the last three years that it’s ultimately a small price to pay.
Pros:
- Multi-purpose machine
- Automatically detects the temperature of the room and adjusts heat accordingly
- Warms the entire room
- Safer than other models
- Machine stays cool to the touch
- Remote attaches to the top of the heater
- Sleek look and feel
- Night mode
Cons:
- Expensive
- Filter must be replaced annually
- Remote can be finicky
Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool HP07 vs. Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus fan heater AM09
In addition to the Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool HP07, our product testing team also evaluated the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus fan heater AM09. Like the Dyson Purfier, the Jet Focus fan has a sleek, modern look with a sturdy design, LED screen and remote. Both models allow you to set your preferred temperature, have heating and cooling abilities and are compatible with the MyDyson app. Most importantly, they both have self-regulating heating elements and cut-out switches in case of overheating or tipping over. But that’s where the similarities end.
The Jet Focus fan does not have an air purifier and costs $250 less. It also fared worse during our testing. “Bit disappointed with the performance of this one,” says Dylan. “But I’m not entirely surprised as many reviews mention the weak fan. The heater itself doesn’t work nearly as well as other models.” During testing, Dylan found that while he could feel a consistent blast of hot air, it didn’t warm the entire room.
Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool HP07 vs. Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx
The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx is the brand’s newest three-in-one purifying fan heater. Like the Dyson Purifier we tested, this updated model features Air Multiplier technology, self-regulating heating elements, cut-out switches, MyDyson app connectivity and a sleek design. The difference between the two models lies in the filtration system.
The Dyson space heater we tested has an advanced HEPA H13 filtration system. The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx features a new K-Carbon filter. “The new K-Carbon filter is impregnated with potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃) and can absorb 50% more nitrogen dioxide–a common and potentially harmful household pollutant, produced by gas appliances, open flames, and wood burning stoves,” explains Thomson. This new model retails for $950, which is $200 more than the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP07.
Final Verdict
It may be pricey, but both short- and long-term testing have shown us that the Dyson space heater is a worthwhile investment. It heats in the winter, cools in the summer and constantly purifies the air making it suitable for year-round use. Better still, it boasts a sleek design and is well-built. In short, you can expect this machine to last for years to come.

FAQ
Does a Dyson space heater use a lot of electricity?
According to Nikolin, space heaters tend to use a lot of electricity. “Space heaters use a lot of electricity and if you run them for long hours, you’ll notice a significant difference in your bills,” he explains. “But if you run it for one hour, it adds somewhere around 20–25 cents to your bill.”
During testing, Dylan found that the Dyson space heater automatically pauses when the desired temperature is hit, making it a more energy-efficient option.
How do you turn on a Dyson space heater?
You can turn on the Dyson space heater using the power button on the included remote or the machine itself.
