5 Ideas to Decorate the Space Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

Go Big on Holiday Decor—Without the Clutter

Jennifer Britton of @thejoyfuldecorator does not take fall decorating lightly and she takes full advantage of that empty space above her kitchen cabinets to celebrate the season, maximally. With cascading faux ivy, textured basket pumpkins, black jack-o’-lanterns, and twinkle lights to make it even more magical, Britton goes big. Using the zone above her cabinets allows her to have tons of fun with seasonal decor without adding clutter to her functional living space. Britton’s upper cabinet trim would have hidden some of her carefully curated decor, so she implemented a clever solution. “The tops of my cabinets drop down a bit, so I added some box lids as a base for the pumpkins,” she shares.

What We Like About It: Britton doesn’t limit herself to “permanent” decor. Instead, she embraces seasonal options, which keeps an often boring space fresh. She describes how she “decided to spice up the empty space above my kitchen cabinets, with a little fall pumpkin patch.” Yes, a whole pumpkin patch.

Make an Accent Wall

Creator Alec Paints of @alecpaintsofficial does what he does best to add interest to a lackluster above-cabinet space by painting it. He goes bold with a deep black that adds drama to an otherwise pretty typical kitchen. The black not only gives the illusion of depth, but also ties in with the mostly black backsplash on the same wall, making the wall look cohesive and intentional. Best of all, the project is super straightforward and simple. It’s a unique twist on the idea to decorate above kitchen cabinets.

What We Like About It: There aren’t any extra things that gather dust. By painting to “decorate” above the kitchen cabinets, you give the space attention without adding items that need to be cleaned, otherwise known as giving yourself more work to do.

Let the Cabinets Shine

Jeff & Megan Hamann of @homewiththehamanns didn’t paint their kitchen cabinets—and they didn’t decorate above their cabinets either. But this in and of itself makes a statement. The combination of the cabinet’s gorgeous wood grain that still shows through, the unusual stain color, and the bright white soaring ceilings allows the cabinets themselves, along with the interesting line they make against the wall, an unexpected but striking aesthetic choice. Bravo!

What We Like About It: The less-is-more approach. The Hamanns didn’t succumb to the painted white cabinet trend, and they also didn’t feel compelled to add items to their above-cabinet space. The result is a stunning minimalist statement definitely not devoid of personality.

Simplicity Works Every Time

When it comes to adding interest to a boring above-cabinet space, Alex Sisoian of @alexandhome knows exactly what she’s doing. Her cabinets are all the same height at the top, so adding various heights in the decorative objects was important. She included pillar candles set on bold black pedestals, a faux plant inside a wicker basket, two shiny pieces of pottery, and a basket with a band of black that echoes both the candle pedestals and the pair of art prints that anchor the entire vignette.

Sisoian’s space epitomizes the guidelines shared by CEO and principal designer Isfira Jensen of Jensen & Co. Interiors, who suggests “well-curated pieces like baskets, oversized vases and wooden boxes that can be in line with the aesthetic of the rest of the room.” Above all, Jensen cautions, “Avoid small knick-knacks since they create a lot of visual clutter.” Sisoian does this well.

What We Like About It: It’s effortless but perfectly balanced. With thoughtfully chosen colors and textures that balance the space while also drawing the eye through it, Sisoian keeps her above-cabinet space simple and tasteful while still adding charm.

Pick a Theme

If you want to decorate the space above your kitchen cabinets but picking out a bunch of different items that go together feels overwhelming, try picking a theme like creator Her Happy Home of @herhappyhome did. She decided on baskets, specifically round baskets, collected a bunch, and made them the dominant component of her above-cabinet space. The circular element contrasts nicely with the right angles of the cabinets while simultaneously echoing the shape of the stools. A bold sign and a small pitcher of greenery keeps the baskets from being monotonous, and nailing them to the wall and overlapping them keeps the execution surprising. When searching for ideas to decorate above kitchen cabinets, remember that collections are king.

What We Like About It: We love a theme and this one shows how you can pick one main item and “multiply” it in order to fill up a large space without making it feel busy.
