When you buy a car, the one thing you’re hoping for above all else is that it will be dependable. Unfortunately, it can often seem like troubleshooting and fixing car problems is simply part of the routine of owning a vehicle.
If you feel as though cars seem less dependable than they were even a decade ago, you’re not just being paranoid. According to J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, the rate of problems in vehicles increased 5 percent in the last year, thanks in part to a surge in reported software issues.
J.D. Power’s data shows that this decline in vehicle quality continues a trend that began in 2o22 as the automotive industry dealt with the ripple effects of COVID-19.
“While the increase in problems this year may be a thorn in the side of automakers and owners, it’s important to remember that today’s three-year-old vehicles were built during a time when the industry was grappling with major disruptions,” said Jason Norton, director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, in a press release about the study. “Supply chain issues, record-high vehicle prices, and personnel disruption in the wake of the pandemic were problematic.”
Even with car dependability issues on the rise, certain brands were able to rise above the rest and provide drivers with stable experiences. According to J.D. Power’s latest data, here are the top ten most dependable car brands.
Top Ten Most Dependable Car Brands in 2025:
- Lexus
- Buick
- Mazda
- Toyota
- Cadillac
- Chevrolet
- GMC
- Porsche
- BMW
- MINI
2025 was Lexus’ third consecutive year in the top spot. This makes sense, as Lexus is a brand known for its high quality and high price tag. However, luxury brands did not completely dominate the list, with Buick, Mazda and Toyota representing the mass market segment with three spots in the top five.
Most Dependable Car Models in 2025
The Toyota Avalon was J.D. Power’s most dependable car model in 2025, which is slightly ironic considering the Avalon was discontinued in 2022. Other top car models in each segment include the Toyota Corolla (Compact Car), BMW 3 Series (Compact Premium Car), Toyota Camry (Midsize Car) and Chevrolet Corvette (Premium Sporty Car).
