If I had $1 for every time I thought about how my husband and I needed a new mattress, Id buy an island. Our Beautyrest mattress had seen better days, and its once firm edges were dipped and didnt offer the same support it did years ago. I wasnt sure what firmness level Ior my husband, for that matterwould prefer, so I felt comfortable testing out the customizable Naturepedic mattress.
This non-toxic mattress allows you to swap out the inside layers. So, if you find that you chose the wrong firmness level or, after years of slumbers, it starts to give, you can swap out a piece of the mattress instead of getting rid of the whole thing. I dont know about you, but that instantly gave me peace of mind when making a decision as personal as a mattress.
What is the Naturepedic Mattress?
This Naturepedic mattress, labeled EOS Classic Organic Mattress (Latex-Free), is certified non-toxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning its free of harmful and allergenic substances. This model also comes in a non-latex-free version (Im just allergic to latex, so I went with the other one). You can shop it in sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California kingall with a 12-inch profile.

Each side of this mattress can have its own firmness level, allowing you to choose between plush, medium, cushion-firm and firm.
Naturepedic Mattress Features
What makes this Naturepedic mattress so special is that youre not married to whatever firmness level you choose, which tends to be a major concern when selecting the best mattress. This non-toxic bed has inserts, meaning it doesnt come all in one piece, including the customizable 3-inch glueless micro-coil layer and the customizable 8-inch glueless encased coil support layer. So while, yes, theres quite a bit of assembly with this model, if youve found youve ordered the wrong firmness level, you can simply swap out the internal components to get the right feel for your sleep. Or, if after many years of snoozing, you find that its more worn in than youd like, you can get a new insert rather than an entirely new bed. Its a convenient feature that makes the buying decision easier.
How We Tested It
My Naturepedic mattress was quick to deliver but took some time to set up. Still, the comfortable sleep was worth it. Heres how I tested this mattress.
Delivery
My order was placed on Monday, the mattress shipped that Wednesday, and it arrived on my front porch that Friday. I was delighted, as I was so over my old mattress and practically foaming at the mouth for my Naturepedic to arrive. It showed up in four separate boxes, so I was thankful that the delivery man slid them into my living room.
The main shell and the inserts are wrapped separately, so it does take time to remove them from the box and unwrap them from the plastic. I made the error of doing all of this in my living room. What I shouldve done was unbox the components, bring them upstairs to my bedroom and unwrap them there. Instead, I did all of that downstairs and had to drag each piece up the stairs. It wasnt ideal, but thats on me.
Assembly
Im going to be honest: The idea of putting together a mattress wasnt exactly exciting to me. But now I see that, long story short; Id rather have to assemble it and have the option of switching out its contents rather than have a mattress in a box that turns out to be totally wrong for me and have to deal with shipping the whole thing back.
Before you even get started, I cant stress enough how helpful this video from Naturepedic was. It goes through each step and gives helpful tips so you know exactly what to do.
Now, Im not the most patient of people, which means that I couldnt wait for my husband to be available to set up this mattress. Plus, I was so over our old one that I couldnt bear spending one more night with less-than-optimal sleep. So, once our old mattress was out of the way, I first brought the Naturepedic shell casing upstairs and laid it on top of our metal bed frame. Then, it was a matter of placing each layer inside of that casing. My husband and I both chose cushion-firm firmness, so our sides were exactly the same.
Assembling the Naturepedic mattress wasnt difficult, per se. The challenge is that the pieces fit very snugly inside the casingas youd want them to so there arent any gaps (and there arent!)so you have to be strategic with ensuring each layer is in the right place and tightly so. After all the layers were in on each side, it was time to zip up the entire thing. This part did cause me to break a sweat. In hindsight, it definitely wouldve been easier had I waited for my husband because one of us couldve held the top and the side close together while the other one zipped. It took a lot of effort for one person to do this.
But I did it all by myselfnot that Id recommend it, but it can be done.
Sleeping
It had been over 10 years since I had picked out a new mattress, so I wasnt sure what firmness my previous one was and what Id like. Plus, my old mattress was worn in, so it didnt feel the same as it had on day one. Among the four firmness level optionsplush, medium, cushion-firm and firmmy husband and I each opted for cushion-firm. When it arrived, I was nervous because it felt quite firm. At one point, I thought maybe the wrong ones were sent. But everything was correct, and I was ready to put this Naturepedic mattress to the test.
On that first night, I noticed right away how different it felt from my old mattress. This one was firmer, as expected, but I also noticed how it felt getting in and out of bed. The edges were strong and supported my weight as I moved. It didnt have that sunken-in feeling as only a very old model does. I appreciated that from the start. If you had asked me before this if I like a firm mattress, I wouldve said absolutely not. My parents have a firm memory foam mattress, and Ive napped in it before while dog-sitting. Ive never liked it. The difference between theirs and mine is that mine is made of coils, and it isnt firm-firm. So, while its not stiff as a board, its still very supportive.
It only took me a few nights to decide that I love this Naturepedic mattress. It turns out that cushion-firm is the perfect firmness for me. In fact, I regularly get knots in my left shoulder, which results in my left arm going numb and leaving me in a lot of pain. Since sleeping on the Naturepedic mattress, Ive noticed those knots are less regular and less severe. I take it that my body likes it, and its more supported than it was before. And as an every-position sleeper, Im happy whether Im on my side, back or stomach.
My husband also got the cushion firm on his side of the bed, but he hasnt fallen in love with it like I have. He finds it too firm and would prefer something softer. Since its only been a little over a month, I want him to give his body more time to adjust. But if, after that, it still hasnt broken to his liking, we know we have the option of swapping out the firmness level. Imagine if we had to send back the entire mattress. Not only would I be disappointed because I love my side of the bed, but it would be a bit of a headache.

Ive been an editor and writer since 2014 and have been in the editorial commerce world, where I test products, write about products and edit shopping stories since 2017. Ive covered everything from beauty products to strollers to, yes, bedding, including cooling sheets and a cooling comforter. Im particularly qualified to review this Naturepedic mattress because its latex-free, and Im allergic to latex. My allergy has only gotten worse as Ive gotten older, so testing a latex-free mattress was super important to me, even though a non-latex-free one would be covered with a mattress topper and sheets anyway. You can never be too careful.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say
From over 20 reviews, this Naturepedic mattress has earned an average of 4.7 out of five stars.
I tried several different beds and found them all to be too hot, and even latex being too warm for me. In my search for a new bed, I became aware of the harmful chemicals in most mattresses. So, I decided that I needed a non-latex, organic mattress, writes Grace, a verified buyer. I decided to try the Naturepedic EOS with microcoils. I started out with cushion-firm and found it too soft. Swapping for firmer coils was easy and now I have the perfect bed. It sleeps cool and I can rest easy knowing that I’m not breathing in toxic chemicals.
I’m sensitive to latex, even the clean/pure Dunlop latex seems to bother my breathing. [It] makes my breathing more shallow, which is an immune response. Many organic beds are made with latex. I still wanted an organic bed being a person spends so much of their life in bed, but I needed to find something latex-free. Enter Naturepedic latex-free, writes Steve, a five-star reviewer. I am beyond pleased with the product! It is super high quality. I do woodworking as a hobby and am very detail oriented. Also, my job is very detail oriented at work. Trust me when I say it is high quality!
Product Comparison: Naturepedic vs. Newton Mattresses
Naturepedic started out focusing on organic crib mattressesand has since expanded to beds for kids and adults, too. Newton is another popular mattress brand for babies, kids and even pets. When deciding between Naturepedic vs. Newton mattresses for your little one, there are some differences to consider.
Naturepedic offers three crib mattresses: classic, breathable and ultra-breathable. They start at $269, and all of them are waterproof, lightweight, or feature coils. The differences come in with the type of cover, if any, and the number of coils. Most importantly, all of Naturepedics crib mattresses are 100% certified organic and free from harmful chemicals. Plus, the brand offers free shipping, a 100-night trial, free returns and a limited lifetime warranty.
Newton also has three crib mattresses (not including its mini crib option): original, waterproof and essential. Starting at $199, the three mattresses are Greenguard Gold Certified. The original and waterproof are 5.5 inches thick and designed for ages 0 to 4, while the essential is four inches thick and made for ages 0 to 3. Each one has a zippered, washable cover, but the essential is a single layer; the original is a quilted double layer, and the waterproof liner is a quilted double layer waterproof liner. Just like with Naturepedic, you also get free shipping, a 100-night trial, free returns and a limited lifetime warranty.
When its time to choose one of the brands, keep these core factors in mind. For one, Newtons crib mattresses are all two-stage models to accommodate your child through the toddler years. But with Naturepedic, you have the option of single-stage or two-stage. On the flip side, all of Naturepedics crib mattresses are waterproof, but only one of Newtons models is waterproofan important consideration since babies tend to get messy. It all comes down to what features are most valuable to you.
Final Verdict
Naturally, youre going to consider the pros and cons more strongly when making a more expensive purchase.TheNaturepedic mattress takes away some of the common cons associated with shopping for a mattress.Being able to customize each side of the bedand swap out the firmness insert if you realize you made the wrong choiceshould instantly put your mind at ease, as it did mine. When you couple that with its non-toxic, organic stamp of approval from GOTS, its pretty hard not to feel safe with this model.
