Buying a Smart Faucet

With all the smart home technology emerging these days, people are always looking for new and innovative ways to control and personalize their living environments. Smart faucets for the kitchen and bath are an easy way to bring your plumbing into the 21st century.

“With so much time being spent at home due to the pandemic, and resulting work-from-home usage along with having children home for the summer, it makes sense that the kitchen and bathroom sinks are seeing more action than ever,” says Joel Worthington, president of Mr. Electric.

Upgrading to a smart faucet has many advantages, and a few disadvantages.

Pros

  • Convenience and ease: “Hands-free faucets are great for people who may have trouble reaching or manipulating a traditional faucet, including children,” says Doyle James, president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing.
  • Water savings: That’s due to automatic shut-offs, low-flow rate and increased leakage prevention.
  • More hygienic: Hands-free design reduces spread of germs and bacteria.
  • Customization: James says some allow users to set their water temperature in advance. They also can be programmed on a timer, so you know how long to brush your teeth or wash your hands.

Cons

  • Require power source: Some are battery-powered, and some need to be plugged in.
  • Cost: More expensive than traditional taps.

If you’re looking to upgrade to a smart faucet, you’ll need to consider the different features available, then decide which ones fit your needs and lifestyle. Most smart faucets include hands-free operation (touch, motion, voice or a combo). Other popular features include:

  • Smart home compatibility;
  • Digital displays;
  • Detection and response to leaks;
  • Pre-set water delivery (precise measurements, pre-programmed temperature, etc.);
  • Manual overrides to work during power outages;
  • Pull-down sprayers (kitchen faucets only).

Command the spout! Here is a collection of smart faucets we love.
