Pick the right kind of concrete sealant

There are two main types of concrete crack filler: self-leveling and non-sag.

Self-leveling concrete crack filler has a runny, gooey consistency that flows into cracks and fills nooks and crannies automatically. It works best for narrow, irregular-shaped cracks.

Non-sag concrete crack filler, on the other hand, is thicker and requires pushing into place in shallow cracks. However, it works well in angled and vertical applications or when used with backer rod (a foam rope that provides backing support) on larger cracks.

For most DIY repairs, self-leveling filler is easier to work with and provides better results.

Prep crack to be repaired

Prepare the crack by clearing out loose debris and weeds. Use a leaf blower, shop vac, broom, and chip brush to clean out loose dirt in the crack’s void. A knife or small flat screwdriver will help remove stubborn debris. Ensure the crack is completely dry before proceeding. Wait for favorable weather conditions with temperatures at least 40°F (or whatever your specific concrete crack filler suggests) and no rain in the forecast for 24 hours.

Fill crack with concrete crack filler

Cut the tip of your concrete crack filler caulk tube at a steep angle to help guide the filler into difficult-to-reach areas. Fill right to the edge and allow the filler to find its way and settle in. If you find the concrete crack filler has settled too deeply in your crack, feel free to top it off with a bit more.

When using non-sag concrete crack filler, you need to manually push the laid filler into the depths of the void with your gloved finger or a small dowel.

If the crack is deeper than 1/2 inch, first install a foam backer rod slightly wider than the width of the crack and then caulk over the top with either kind of sealer.

With either concrete crack filler, you want the caulk bead to dry just below the surface of the concrete driveway to prevent a tripping hazard and extra wear and tear.

Sprinkle with sand

Once the crack is filled to the desired height with filler, sprinkle a light layer of sand directly onto it. This will help the caulk blend in and camouflage the repair, as well as prevent small animals and yard debris from sticking to it until it dries and cures. Allow the concrete crack filler to fully dry before brushing off the excess sand.

What do I do if the concrete cracks in my driveway are deep?

If any of your cracks are deeper and wider than 1/2-inch, you will need to fill the crack with a foam backer rod or sand before you fill the crack with concrete repair caulk.  Foam backer rod comes in different thicknesses and a variety of lengths. You may also consider a specialized concrete crack repair patching for wider and deeper cracks.  Once cracks get too large, you should consult a professional for the best way to approach the repair.

Does concrete repair caulk come in another color, other than gray?

Both types of concrete repair filler provide color options. Options include light gray, dark gray and a warmer earthy/pink tone. Pick which one will blend best with your concrete.
