Your phone is home to plenty of apps, and many of those apps use its recording capabilities. But knowing when the microphone or camera is active isn’t always straightforward, especially if you haven’t committed all of the iPhone indicator meanings to memory. However, for your security, you should always know what apps can access recording permissions and how to tell when something is recording. So, what does the orange dot in the top corner of your iPhone mean?
What Does the iPhone Orange Dot Mean?
According to Apple, the orange dot is an indicator light. Just like the green dot in the upper right corner indicates that your camera is on, like when you’re using an app like Snapchat or Facetime, the orange dot shows that your phone is recording. More specifically, the orange dot on your iPhone shows that your phone’s microphone is on and currently recording. Sometimes this is just fine, but other times this may be cause for concern.
What Should You Do if You See the Orange Dot?
If you see the orange dot, something is currently capturing audio. To start, check to see which apps are open. If you’re recording audio or video, or on a voice call, then it makes sense that the light is on. Your microphone is working properly and doing its job. However, if you see the light when you’re not doing something that utilizes the microphone, that’s cause for concern.
To fix this, you have a couple of options. To begin with, you can close out all your open apps. You can check for the light between closing each app to pinpoint which one is using the microphone. From there, you can confirm whether this was a simple case of forgetfulness or cause for concern. If you’re particularly worried about a particular app having recording access, you can either restrict it or delete it from your phone entirely.
Regardless of how you feel about apps having access to your microphone, you should periodically check the permissions of different apps in your Settings menu. You can remove the microphone permissions from any undesirable apps right there. You should be able to choose between “Always Allow”, “Only Allow While App is Open”, and “Never Allow”. This way, you can still utilize the recording capabilities when you need them but turn them off the rest of the time.
