Wireless Motion Activated Cameras: 3 Best Options

Theft, trespassing, and malicious mischief are part of life, regardless of where someone lives. Too many times, perpetrators get away with their crimes on private property. Investing in an outdoor security camera before becoming a victim is the ideal plan of action. There are many options available, but for many people, wireless motion activated cameras provide the best option. They are easy to set up, and only record video when they detect movement in their field of view. This feature means that users do not have to sift through hours of video to find the action they are looking for.

First, How Do Wireless Motion Cameras Work

Outdoor smart home devices must be durable enough to withstand snow, rain, and extreme temperature changes. They also require a stable network connection so the homeowner can view the video when motion is detected.

Wireless motion cameras typically use WiFi connections to communicate with a user that is accessing an app to check up on their homes. But, some models are capable of using Bluetooth, Z-Wave, or proprietary wireless technology.

WiFi cameras are super easy to install. Models that use Ethernet have limits because of the nearness to port and the wiring. Cameras that run on rechargeable batteries have the ease of the anywhere installation.

Weatherproof

Outdoor cameras must stand up to weather, given their purpose. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is what people need to look at when considering the investment into an outdoor wireless motion camera. The IP is two digits that signal its durability.

The first digit following the IP prefix tells you how resistant the camera is to the ingress of solid objects such as wind-blown dust and ranges from 0 (no protection) to 6 (total protection against dust and dirt). The second number tells you how resistant the camera is to moisture and ranges from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protected against close range, high pressure spray downs from all angles).

The majority of security cameras have an IP66 rating. It means they are safe from dust and able to take water damage on every side. They are also safe from snow, heat, and cold.

Resolution

What good is a security camera without a clear picture? Outdoor cameras that only captures video at 720p are okayish, but 1080p cams deliver a sharp image and do not require a lot of storage capacity. The higher resolution is easily viewable on nearly all devices: Tablets, PCs, and cellphones.

Ultra HD, 4K, is available but requires a powerful connection to stream without lag or unwanted pausing.

Good resolution is pointless unless the field of view, viewing angle, is wide. The optimal night vision range is at least 30 ft (ca. 9 m).

Motion and Sound Detection:

Motion sensors are one of those features that are a must-have. The optimal option for motion triggering is the alerts they send by phone app and email.

The second layer of sound detection means more in-depth protection. It works for intruders or trespassers that are out of camera range. Like motion-triggered video sensitivity, sound activation is delicate, too, and requires a little attention to avoid false alerts.

Let’s go for the third layer of security. Cameras with two-way communication come in handy when uninvited visitors show up. It is a useful way to avoid answering the doorbell.

Storage

Storage comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Free storage has limitations because it goes away in typically seven days. But, subscriptions allow for more extended storage, giving time for review and download.

For those who cherish privacy, storage on the cloud is likely not the best option. A camera with microSD cards stores information locally and preserve privacy.

If This Then That

No one doubts that automation is the way to the future. An outdoor wireless motion camera that supports IFTTT (If This Then That) allows users to create and utilize small programs that connect to other smart devices such as Alexa and Google Assistant to automate household tasks. Examples: locking doors, turning off lights, and activating sirens

The investment in a wireless motion camera is an investment in safety. The more protection and the deeper the layers, the more it is worth it.
