171K Mazdas Recalled Over Airbag Safety Risk — Is Yours on the List

Automotive recalls are a fact of life, and they should never be ignored. Sometimes, the issue is something small and easily fixable, but other times, the recall is due to faulty safety features. Unfortunately for Mazda owners, the recent recall involves the latter. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), hundreds of thousands of Mazdas have faulty airbags. Which Mazdas Have Faulty Airbags?

Nearly 172,000 Mazdas have faulty airbags, including the:

• 2024 Mazda3
• 2025 Mazda3
• 204 CX30
• 2025 CX30

If you own one of these models, keep an eye on your mailbox. Mazda will mail out owner notification letters in late July 2025. Until you’ve confirmed one way or the other if your Mazda vehicle has faulty airbags, be extra diligent when driving. If you can’t count on your airbags to work, you have one less layer of protection in the event of an accident.

Why Is Mazda Recalling So Many Vehicles?

According to the NHTSA recall brief, the impacted Mazdas all have problems with their airbag sensors. The NHTSA explains that “the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) units may set an error code and deactivate the airbags due to a low battery condition.” If you don’t regularly drive with passengers or drive all that often to begin with, you might take your airbags for granted. But malfunctioning ones put you and your passengers in danger. The NHTSA warns that “airbags that do not deploy in the event of a crash increase the risk of injury.”

How Will Mazda Fix This Problem?

According to Mazda, “dealers will reprogram the SAS unit with improved software or replace the unit, free of charge.” Aim to schedule your repair as soon as possible, and minimize your use of the vehicle until that appointment. Airbags are important safety devices, and driving while they pose a risk of malfunctioning is flirting with disaster.
