For more than 25 years, vinyl siding has been the most popular choice for exterior cladding on newly-built homes in the U.S. It’s attractive because it’s durable, affordable and nearly maintenance free.
While other types of siding require painting, caulking and filling, vinyl siding only needs a quick scrub-down every year or two to stay looking great. Most folks attempt to do this with chemicals, soaps, power washers and any run-of-the-mill scrub brush they can find.
Recently I heard of a father-and-son team from Illinois, Tim and TJ McManaman, who developed a vinyl siding brush that worked without harsh detergents or power washers. So I got one shipped my way and gave it a whirl.
What is the Siding Brush?
The Siding Brush is an 11-1/2-inch-long piece of heavy-duty plastic with a swiveling adapter that accepts any broomstick or telescoping paint roller extension pole (not included). There are four rows of nylon bristles along the far ends of the brush, with a few more rows running three inches along each corner of the top edge.
How Does the Siding Brush Work?
The Siding Brush was developed as an eco-friendly way to remove algae and green mold from standard three- or four-inch vinyl siding. Unfortunately it doesn’t work on Dutch-style vinyl siding, though I’m told one that will is in development.
To use, attach the Siding Brush to a standard extension pole. Lightly spray the soiled section of siding with the garden hose and begin scrubbing by sliding the Siding Brush laterally across the panels. Start low on the wall and work your way up, until the siding is brushed clean. A final rinse with water, and your siding will be mold and algae free!
Here is a quick video of the brush in action.
I happen to be one of the few homeowners without standard-style vinyl siding. But after a quick phone call and dragging the garden hose across my lawn, I put the Siding Brush through its paces on my next door neighbor Mary’s garage.
The brush worked just as advertised. It scrubbed the siding clean with just some water. Simple and straightforward to operate, it left the siding on Mary’s garage looking like new in no time.
