By now, you know that face masks can help prevent the transmission of the novel coronavirus. As of late April, at least seven states are requiring people to wear it when visiting essential businesses or taking public transportation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends it for most people, especially when it’s difficult to maintain the recommended six feet of social distance. “The grocery store is a perfect example [of when to wear one],” says Ann Marie Pettis, RN, the president-elect of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). Since there’s a shortage of medical-grade masks, people are crafting DIY options from cloth to comply and to stay safe. But masks only work when worn and cared for correctly. Don’t make these mistakes.
