What to Know About Polyester Carpets

Polyester is one of the most common carpet materials. Here’s why. And here’s how to know if polyester carpet is right for your home.

What is Polyester Carpet?

Polyester is a synthetic (manufactured) material derived from two chemicals — purified terephthalic acid (PTS) or its dimethyl ester, dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), and monotheluene glycol (MEG). This combination creates a polymer known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a type of resin, or plastic. Traditional polyester carpet is made from this material.

Types of Polyester Carpet

Besides traditional polyester carpet, you may encounter two variations.

The first is made from recycled materials like plastic bottles and tires. Manufacturers of this type claim the recycled materials make the yarn stronger than traditional polyester. It’s also an eco-friendly flooring option.

Another variation is triexta. This newer, polyester-derived material is more durable and resilient than traditional polyester. It’s marketed as SmartStrand.

Polyester Carpet Pros

  • Inexpensive: Polyester is one of the most budget-friendly flooring options around. Expect to pay between $0.85 to $5.50 per square foot for polyester carpet compared to $3.25 to $7.50 per square foot for nylon carpet or around $8 to $22 per square foot for installed hardwood flooring.

  • Stain and water resistant: Because polyester is a fiber made from closed cells, it repels liquids. That makes it harder for stains and water to damage the fibers.

  • Less static buildup: Unlike nylon carpet, polyester carpet creates little static electricity.

  • Soft: Polyester has a soft feel underfoot.

  • Many options: Polyester carpet comes in a wide range of colors, styles, textures and patterns.

Polyester Carpet Cons

  • Less durable than other options: Traditional polyester doesn’t hold up as well as nylon and wool. Consider triexta if you want a more durable option.

  • Tends to “crush” easily: Polyester carpet fibers often look matted from foot traffic. That’s why many carpet pros suggest installing polyester carpet in low-traffic areas.
