Costco Won’t Let Shoppers Return Toilet Paper and Other High-Demand Items

Stocking up on grocery store essentials is a necessity for social distancing. Costco is the go-to stop for people purchasing things in bulk — like mac and cheese the size of your head. Shoppers have been stocking up on all kinds of things recently, from disinfectants and hand sanitizer to, oddly, toilet paper.

Now Costco is limiting what items can be returned. Here’s what we know.

What’s the New Rule at Costco?

According to Instagram accounts like @CostcoBuys, signs are showing up in some locations limiting returns on essentials. That includes toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizing wipes, water, rice and Lysol. This may be to discourage overbuying and hoarding, which has been a problem in some areas.

I‘m super glad Costco is doing this! Do you think this is a good idea? 🤔

Costco is also taking extra measures to guarantee their essential items are available for all customers. Shoppers are only allowed to order two units of everything, including toilet paper and disinfecting wipes. Target is taking a similar stance, rationing their necessities to keep stock available.

If you do shop at Costco this weekend, we recommend placing your order at Costco.com, an option available to members and non-members.

Will This Policy Roll Out Nationwide?

Costco hasn’t made any announcements. The policy appears to be applied on a case-by-case or store-by-store basis. If you’ve got some items to return, it’s worth it to call your location first, just to make sure.

Costco is also rolling out new guidelines in response to the coronavirus outbreak. You can check out their official statement here.
