Give your Tools an Ugly Makeover
Used tool buyers gauge the value of a power tool by its appearance. So they look for the familiar Milwaukee red, DeWalt yellow, Ridgid orange, Makita blue, and Bosch blue brand colors and name plates and the visual condition of the tool. Your job is to damage your tools’ appearance, making is far less valuable to the crook and their buyers. Start by removing the brand name plate (but leave the plate containing the tool’s serial number). Next, buy a can of bright neon colored green or pink spray paint, along with spray glitter paint and painter’s tape. Spray the entire tool with the neon color. Then tape off sections of the tool to add hideous stripes in a unique pattern with the glitter paint. Finish the job with clear coat to protect your work of art. Take pictures of your unique works of art to help police track them down if they’re stolen. Bottom line: Crooks don’t steal tools they can’t fence and they certainly don’t want ugly tools that can be traced because of their unique look.
If you’re going to spray paint your tools, here’s how to make a simple spray painting booth so you don’t get paint on anything else.
