5 Types of Furnaces

Hot water heater and furnace in basement

Gas Furnace

Gas furnaces generate heat by burning natural gas. They’re available in varying sizes and energy efficiencies and produce a hot, dry heat. While still the most widely used furnaces, they’re starting to lose market share to electric models due to utility costs, environmental concerns and tax incentives.

Mitchell says gas furnaces are an excellent choice in regions with harsh winters due to their powerful heating capacity. He suggests looking at more than just the initial price when selecting a furnace. “Gas furnaces might have higher installation costs,” he says, “but they generally offer lower monthly running costs.”

Gervais agrees. Gas furnaces, he says, are “a smart choice in regions with cold climates and affordable natural gas.” He adds they “require a connection to the gas supply and regular maintenance to ensure safety and efficiency.”

How to identify a gas furnace

It’s easy: You’ll see a gas supply line and exhaust flues. Low-efficiency gas furnaces will vent to the roof, while higher efficiency models vent out to an exterior wall.

Can You Put a Hot Tub on a Deck?

If you’re thinking of getting a hot tub, your deck can seem like the perfect place to put it. The good news is, you can put one on a deck. But you’ll need thoughtful planning and the help of a contractor or structural engineer to do it safely.

If this project is on your wish list, read on for expert tips from four industry pros: Dusty Walters, owner of a hot tub sales and service company; Chris Hoppe, a structural engineer; Chris Jacobs, a licensed contractor; and Dennis Moore, a hot tub installer.

How To Tell If Your Hot Tub Is Deck Friendly

When purchasing a hot tub for your deck, carefully consider its weight and size.

Weight

Hot tubs are heavy. Even when empty, they can weigh 400 to 1,000 pounds. Filled with water and people, that number can soar to more than 10,000 pounds for larger models. “A hot tub full of water can weigh as much as a car,” Hoppe says. Most decks can’t support a load that large.

However, most decks can handle smaller to medium-sized tubs that hold three to six people and less than 600 gallons of water. These usually weigh 4,000 to 6,000 pounds when occupied a more manageable number. “A lot of tubs can fit on a residential deck, unless it’s a monster,” Jacobs says.

Size

Hot tubs have standard size ranges for small, medium and large models.

To determine what size hot tub will fit on your deck, use painter’s tape to mark these dimensions on the deck floor. See which size leaves enough room for walking, furniture and maintenance access. You’ll need 24 to 36 inches of clearance around all four sides.

Deck Considerations for a Hot Tub

Strength

“Decks must be properly supported and built to support the weight of a spa,” Moore says.

Most decks are built with 2- by 8-inch joists (floor supports) spaced 16 inches apart from the center of one board to the center of the next. Decks built this way can support 50 pounds per square foot (pps).

“What this means is, if you take a 12- by 12-inch bag of sand that weighs fifty pounds and laid it on every square foot on the deck, that is what it can hold,” Jacobs says. Put another way: A 100-sq.-ft. deck built to code could hold 5,000 pounds.

So how much weight can your deck handle? Whatever your structural engineer or contractor says it can. “We always recommend having an engineer check the deck to make sure it can handle the weight of the spa,” Walters says.

In the early planning stages, you can do some measuring and basic math to get a rough estimate. Go underneath the deck and measure the width of your joists and their distance apart. If they’re eight inches wide and spaced 16 inches apart, multiply your deck’s square footage by 50 for a rough idea of how much weight it can hold.

If your deck’s joists are a different measurement, consult with a pro to determine its weight limits.

Height

If your deck is really high off the ground, installation is still possible, but it will be more complex and expensive.

Walters doesn’t recommend carrying hot tubs on stairs, because it can damage the deck or spa. Instead, he uses a crane for installations higher than four or five feet off the ground. Make sure to factor in this cost to your project total.

Proximity to utilities

You’ll need a properly rated receptacle installed near your hot tub. The longer the distance between the hot tub and the main breaker box, the more expensive this will be. So consider this cost when determining if your deck is the best location.

Access to water will be necessary as well. A hose should reach the hot tub for filling and occasional topping off. Check the proximity of an outside spigot to your deck, or hire a plumber to add one closer to the tub.

Age

An aging deck may not be the best candidate for a hot tub. Exposure to the elements and ultraviolet rays can weaken deck boards over time. Also, older decks may not be built to today’s code requirements and could pose a safety risk.

If your deck is showing signs of decay weathered or split boards, rotting posts or loose railings consult with a contractor to assess its safety.

Reinforce the Deck

If your deck can’t hold the weight of the hot tub you want, structural reinforcements can be installed to increase its strength. Your engineer or contractor may suggest adding wider joists more closely spaced to support the additional weight.

They also may want to add or widen the deck’s footings. Footings are the structural support posts of a deck that evenly transfer the load to the ground. “Without stronger footings, [the deck] could start to sink under its own weight,” Jacobs says.

Sink the Hot Tub Into the Deck Instead

Another option is installing a recessed hot tub. Instead of resting on top of the deck, the tub sits on a poured concrete slab under it, so the top edge is flush or just above the deck floor. This eliminates the need to climb over the walls to enter and exit.

This setup has deck height requirements and must allow for maintenance access as well. “There are very specific things that need to be done to create service access on all four sides of the spa if you sink the spa into the deck,” Moore says. This can include decking and lattice skirting which can be removed to allow service workers to complete maintenance tasks.

How Electrical Code Requirements for Kitchen Islands Have Changed

As a retired chief electrical inspector and master electrician with 45 years of experience, I had countless kitchen table meetings with homeowners and electrical contractors to explain the rules in the National Electrical Code (NEC) for kitchen island and peninsula receptacle outlets.

Some homeowners didn’t want them at all. Others thought there should be more of them. Sometimes I felt like a diplomat negotiating peace treaties.

An adequate number of receptacles throughout a home discourages the need for unsafe extension cords, especially in a busy kitchen. Decades ago, only a minimum number of island and peninsula receptacles were required. In later years, the pendulum swung in the opposite direction. The code required additional receptacles due to all the countertop kitchen appliances that came into use.

The tug-of-war went back and forth a few times over the years. Finally, we can dispense with the arguments and negotiations because receptacles are now optional on islands and peninsulas. Why didn’t we come up with this simple solution long ago?

What Are the NEC Changes Regarding Kitchen Islands?

Instead of mandating any receptacles at all, the 2023 NEC now simply states that “if” receptacles are installed to serve an island or peninsula countertop or work surface, only a few basic rules need to be followed.

Future additions

If a receptacle is not installed to serve the countertop or work surface, provisions need to be provided at the island or peninsula for the future addition of one or more.

How? The branch circuit wiring could be extended to the island or peninsula cabinet and safely dead-ended in a junction box with a blank cover. The cover should be marked something like, “Power for future receptacles.”

How is a countertop different than a work surface?

  • A work surface is typically intended for dry use, other than food preparation, where the risk of spilled liquids impacting receptacles is incidental and limited to smaller quantities. A practical example could be a built-in desk in a kitchen.
  • A countertop is typically intended for food preparation and serving. The routine risk of spilled liquids often involves larger quantities that could impact receptacles mounted directly on or recessed in the surface. This definition would include all typical food preparation countertops in a kitchen.

Receptacle locations

If receptacles are installed, they are allowed in one or more of the following locations:

  • On or above the countertop or work surface, but not more than 20 inches above. (This could include installing receptacles on the underside of overhead cabinets.)
  • On or recessed in a countertop using a receptacle outlet assembly specifically approved for countertop use by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ETL Intertek (ETL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or a similar product testing organization.
  • On or recessed in a work surface using a receptacle outlet assembly specifically approved for use in a work surface or countertop by a product testing organization.
    • Pro tip: A receptacle outlet assembly approved for use on or in a countertop can also be used on or in a work surface. However, a receptacle outlet assembly only approved for use on or in a work surface can’t be installed in a countertop because it may not stop the intrusion of larger quantities of spilled liquids.
  • When shopping for receptacle outlet assemblies for countertops, make sure they’re approved for use on or in the countertop, and the product marking or manufacturer’s specifications say so.
  • Receptacles are never permitted to be installed in a face-up position on or in any countertop or work surface unless they’re specifically approved for that purpose.

Why Were NEC Kitchen Island Requirements Changed?

The NEC is updated every three years. When the 2020 NEC was being revised for 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) provided data compiled over the past 20 years that showed thousands of injuries and burns and several deaths caused by countertop cooking appliances.

CPSC investigations showed curious young children often pulled on appliance cords draped over the edge of countertops, which caused tipping and spillage of hot liquids. Appliance cords draped over the edge of a countertop are also prone to inadvertent snagging when people walk past.

Do I Have To Get Rid of My Kitchen Island Side Receptacles?

No. The NEC generally is not retroactive. Electrical wiring installed to meet the NEC that was in effect at the time of that original installation may remain in place.

Existing kitchen island and peninsula receptacles can continue to be used. However, knowing that side-mounted receptacles can be a potential hazard, this may be a good time to improve safety in your kitchen.

Can I Retrofit My Kitchen Island to Comply With the New Rules?

Yes, you can certainly update your home’s wiring to the current code at any time.

To eliminate the hazards of appliance cords unsafely draped over the edge of a countertop, simply remove the receptacle from the outlet box on the side of the island or peninsula. Here’s how:

  • Turn off the power.
  • Test to make sure the power is off.
  • Remove the receptacle from the outlet box and disconnect the wires from the receptacle terminals
  • Separately tape up the ends of the black and white wires in the box with some electrical tape, or use twist-on wire connectors over the end of each wire.
  • Fold the wires neatly back into the box.
  • Install a blank cover on the box.
  • Turn the power back on.

The branch circuit wiring will be safely enclosed in the outlet box for the future in case you change your mind, or for the next owner of the home.

Alternatively, numerous receptacle outlet assemblies can be installed on or recessed in countertops, or on or recessed in overhead cabinets.

Lew Electric Fittings Company and Hubbell Wiring Devices are among the manufacturers offering receptacle outlet assemblies approved for countertops, work surfaces and overhead cabinet locations. Many options are available, including GFCI protection, USB outlets and wireless phone charging.

We Tested the Husqvarna TS 242XD, and This Riding Lawn Mower Offers Speed, Power and Fun

Fhm We Tried It Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

Lawn care enthusiasts and gardening experts know Husqvarna is one of the best companies for chainsaws, robotic mowers and gas leaf blowers. But how does its riding lawn mower stack up to the competition?

To answer that question, we reached out to longtime homeowner and riding mower expert Tyler O’Rourke, who’s used everything from the classic John Deere to zero-turn mowers for work and his personal lawn. He says the Husqvarna TS 242XD is a beast that “obliterated” the typical mow on his half-acre property. “What used to be a two- to three-hour mow was done in a mere 30 minutes,” O’Rourke says. “Beyond that, it’s just fun to drive.”

In addition to breaking down O’Rourke’s experience with the Husqvarna TS 242XD riding mower, we had other gardening experts weigh in on the model. Spoiler alert: They loved it, too.

What is the Husqvarna TS 242XD?

The Husqvarna TS 242XD is a riding mower made by the gardening equipment company Husqvarna (which started as a weapons manufacturer in the 1600s, but in recent years has been known for its lawn mowers and other gardening equipment). It boasts all-day comfort with a vinyl seat that O’Rourke says lives up to Husqvarna’s promise.

“Once it’s in the right spot for your height, it’s a thing of beauty,” he says. “The padding is great for those long mowing sessions.” And it’s not just O’Rourke who’s benefiting from this mower. “I’ve kept right on mowing next door to save them the push or the wait for the landscaper to arrive,” he says.

We Tried It

This 42-inch, gas-powered riding mower cuts down the competition.

Husqvarna TS 242XD Features

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

Here are a few things that help the Husqvarna TS 242XD stand above the competition.

Kawasaki Motor

The Husqvarna TS 242XD has a 21.5 horsepower Kawasaki motor that has handled everything O’Rourke has thrown at it. “It’s like the Hulk of lawn mowers,” he says. “I’ve thrown a few sticks, pinecones and even taken on some dirt mounds when I was mowing (OK, mowing a bit too low). The results? Flawless. It devoured everything without breaking a sweat.”

Kawasaki motors are the best for riding mowers because they’re durable and powerful, according to gardener and Plant Bible founder, Zahid Adnan. “This engine provides ample power for mowing through even challenging terrains with ease,” Adnan says.

If you have a need for speed, O’Rourke adds that this riding mower can be fast and furious when needed. “In all seriousness, the Husqvarna TS 242XD would even make Dominic Toretto proud. It’s fastlike really fast. It’s a real speed demon in the world of lawn mowers.” Husqvarna says the maximum speed of this riding lawn mower is 5.5 miles per hour.

Are you looking for power? O’Rourke was able to drag a small truck with rocks and mulch up a hill using the Husqvarna riding mower. “Raw power,” he says. “This thing is a beast.”

Cutting Deck

A 42-inch cutting deck means you can tackle a large lawn in fewer passes. “With a wide deck like this, you’ll be done with your mowing tasks in no time, giving you more time to relax and enjoy your well-maintained lawn,” O’Rourke says.

He adds that the adjustable deck is good for short and long grass, but notes it does best on flat terrain. “It’s almost as if gravity pulls it further into the ground on the lower side, resulting in an uneven cut with a bit of a lower edge rather than a parallel cut to the angle of the hill,” O’Rourke says.

Comfortable Seat

There’s nothing worse than an uncomfortable riding mower, especially since the whole point of it is to make mowing your lawn more comfortable. “Luckily, the Husqvarna TS 242XD’s extra-thick cushions are so comfortable you could sit for hours,” O’Rourke says. “The padding is great for those long mowing sessions.” One con, he notes, is that the seat isn’t ventilated, so there will be some sweat on hotter days.

Adnan was also a big fan of the seat. “Husqvarna has paid attention to user comfort with a comfortable high-back seat and intuitive controls,” he says. “This makes long mowing sessions less fatiguing.”

LED Lights

Nighttime mows are nobody’s favorite, but they happen from time to time. The Husqvarna TS 242XD’s light-emitting diode (LED) lights make those post-sunset chores a little easier and safer. “They’re a game-changer in the dark, but not so much during twilight,” O’Rourke says.

How We Tested It

O’Rourke put the Husqvarna TS 242XD riding lawn mower to the test. In addition to testing and researching just about every riding mower there is, O’Rourke also has a half-acre property that includes crabgrass, Bermuda grass and some hills to create the perfect test course for a riding mower. O’Rourke says his typical lawn care duties previously took him two to three hours, but with the Husqvarna TS 242XD he’s done in about 30 minutes.

Turning Radius

Although it’s not quite a zero-turn riding mower, O’Rourke says the Husqvarna TS 242XD can get in the crooks and crannies of most yards with ease. “It’s quick in a three-point turn when needed and handles garden edges with ease,” he says. “The brush guard is a helpful buffer to get up close and personal with larger trees or bushes, allowing you to get the deck as close as possible without any unintended tree consumption.”

He adds that you should slow down when trying to make turns. “Turning at full speed can be a bit too much for your lawn to handle,” he says. “It can potentially tear up your grass a bit. I learned this lesson the hard way during one late dusk mow right before dark. Luckily, there was no lasting damage, but it’s worth keeping in mind.”

Customer Service

Husqvarna is known for high-quality customer service, and O’Rourke’s experience with it regarding his riding mower was no different. The company told him the mower was going to arrive later than expected due to a manufacturing defect. “This level of customer care stood out, and it’s a testament to Husqvarna’s commitment to making things right when they go wrong,” O’Rourke says.

Replacement Parts

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

O’Rourke had an unexpected hiccup hours after starting the Husqvarna when his belt gave out. He notes that the Husqvarna TS 242XD’s manual gave few instructions on how to replace it, and that he had to find a DIY video on YouTube to guide him through the process.

He also says you may have to do trial-and-error when looking for non-Husqvarna accessories, such as a clippings collector/bag. “[The connector chute] has square edges, which means no easy fit with most attachments at retail stores,” O’Rourke says. “I even matched the serial number at Lowe’s to the one that supposedly fit the model on the Husqvarna website, and still, no dice.”

Husqvarna sells its own accessories on its website and lets you know which ones fit which models, so you don’t have to hunt for the optimal lawn mower cover.

Delivery

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

O’Rourke and other customer reviewers were thrilled with the delivery process. “The Husqvarna TS 242 was hand-delivered and rolled off a U-Haul trailer,” he says. “This isn’t your typical drop-it-on-your-doorstep scenario.”

In other words, this Husqvarna riding mower arrives pre-assembled. All you have to do is fill her up and start mowing.

Pros

  • Durable and powerful Kawasaki motor
  • 42-inch cutting deck
  • Easy to turn in tight spaces
  • Can cut a lot of grass and overgrowth
  • LED lights
  • Comfortable seat
  • Great customer service

Cons

  • Expensive

Is It Better To Roll Your Clothes or Fold Them?

It’s a well-known packing hack roll your clothes to reduce wrinkling and take up less space in your suitcase. And I admit, when it comes to packing for a trip, I’m firmly on Team Roll, especially when the hack is combined with space-saving packing cubes. But is rolling clothes only suitable when traveling, or is it still applicable when you’re organizing clothes for everyday use or seasonal storage?

“The roll vs. fold debate has been going on for a long time,” says Darla DeMorrow, a Certified Professional Organizer and owner of HeartWork Organizing. “But the type of organization you prefer won’t change the dimensions of your drawers or how much stuff you can put in them. As good as we are, even we professional organizers can’t change the laws of physics!”

We asked DeMorrow and a colleague to weigh in on the pros and cons of rolling versus folding and they had a lot to say on the subject.

Roll or Fold: Which Saves More Space?

As you might expect, the space-saving benefits of rolling or folding clothes depend largely on the space you’re trying to fit those clothes into. We asked our pros to address the following scenarios, and whether they’re Team Roll or Team Fold.

Organizing everyday clothes

Whether it’s more effective to roll or fold clothes in a bedroom dresser depends on the type of clothing, says professional home organizer and declutter expert Brenda Scott of Tidy My Space. “Folding saves more space but it depends on the bulkiness and size of the item, she says. “Children’s little clothing can be either folded or rolled but adult size t-shirts or jeans are much larger and take to folding better.” DeMorrow adds that If you have very shallow drawers, “rolling can help you keep everything visible in a single layer. Deeper drawers may not work as well for rolling lightweight and mid-weight fabrics.”

Putting clothes away for seasonal storage

Scott is Team Fold on this one, while DeMorrow is indifferent. “You are likely to wash them all before you wear them next season,” she says. “Pack them away however they fit best in your bins or containers. For all but a very few garments, like ballgowns and tuxes, a wash-and-dry cycle (or just a fluff cycle) will remove any storage wrinkles.”

Packing for a trip

“I prefer rolling,” says DeMorrow, “not because it eliminates wrinkles (it doesn’t), but because rolling a day’s worth of travel clothes into a tight little package can make staying organized easier on the road.” Scott is also a fan of rolling clothes for travel packing because it, “saves space and items can be rolled together.” If you don’t have time to unpack in your hotel room, rolled clothes also offer a quick glance at your wardrobe choices without having to take things out of your suitcase.

Packing for a house move

If you’re packing up all your clothes for a move, Scott says to fold clothes and put them in vacuum bags in order to reduce the size of the container needed. “You can get more into a moving box if the air is removed. This is especially true for sweaters, parkas, bedding and towels.” DeMorrow adds that short-haul moves often allow you to keep folded clothes in drawers and dressers. “If not,” she says, “and for long-haul moves, place your clothing in moving boxes in layers, with a towel or packing paper separating layers going in different drawers.”

Roll or Fold: Which Is Better for Your Clothes?

Many of us have bought in on the idea that rolling clothes reduces wrinkles, but it may not be true. “Wrinkles happen,” says DeMorrow. “The idea that rolled clothes don’t wrinkle is ridiculous. What does change, though, is where you put the creases and whether you create pressure on flat folded items by stacking more flat folded items on top of them.” For example, she explains, “If you flat-fold garments and then store them in stacks, the weight of the other garments may cause creases.”

But rolling might not be the answer. “If you convert a packed drawer full of t-shirts from folded to rolled, but then you crush the stacks from the front to the back of the drawer, you’ll still end up with wrinkles,” says DeMorrow. “Remember, there’s no new space created in that drawer without editing out some items.”

Scott prefers rolling slinky fabrics, like satin. “Rolling will reduce wrinkles that folding may cause,” she says. “Even when rolling, you need to have the garment as smooth as possible. Rolling doesn’t mean crumbled up in a ball!”

Whether rolled or folded, DeMorrow likes clothes to be visible from the top, or “filed” inside a drawer if there is room. “This means you can see everything at a glance, with nothing hiding under a pile.

Is Roll vs. Fold Just a Question of Personal Preference?

I once tried rolling all my tween daughter’s shirts and pants, so that she could more easily see the contents of her dresser without tossing things hither and yon searching for a favorite item. I was proud of my system, but it lasted all of a week until my mother-in-law came over and kindly offered to fold my laundry. Since I don’t complain when people offer to fold my laundry, I let it go, and we went back to folded clothes.

Which one of us was “right?” Scott says it’s as much a matter of personal preference as anything, along with “hand dexterity, mental capability to solve the folding puzzle, the time you allocate to putting clothes away and the space available for clothing.” DeMorrow agrees and says Team Roll or Team Fold is 100% a question of personal preference. “Well, maybe 95%. Some drawers are oddly narrow, too deep or frustratingly shallow, and need to be optimized for your wardrobe. It might take several tries to really optimize the space in drawers and on shelves for folded and rolled clothing. Don’t stop at the first try if you think there might be a better way to store your stuff.”

And she closes this roll or fold debate with a brilliant closet storage hack: “Maximize all of your hanging space, swapping out a single clothes rod for a double-hang rod.” This is an especially helpful tip for a small closet.

“This is one instance where you literally can double your useable space,” says DeMorrow.
