How We Tested It

When I first laid eyes on the Sylvox Bathroom TV Mirror, I fell in love with the curved, clean lines and simplistic design. What a beauty!

After unpacking the box, it only took nine minutes to install, thanks to the ingenious wall mount included in the package. Once we decided where to place the TV/mirror, we gathered up a level and a drill and marked the seven screw holes using the included wall bracket as a template. Next, we secured the bracket to the wall with the included fittings. Then, we simply lined up the frame hooks with the slots on the back of the unit and hung it up. Done!

Now, we were ready to connect our subscriptions. We used a Roku stick in the USB port, and connectivity took just 15 minutes. We flipped through the settings and played with the brightness adjustments and sound. The TV offers five sound modes. The unit has two built-in speakers that are fine for a bathroom or bedroom. And if the sound isnt as robust as you prefer, you can always connect it to an external sound system or Bluetooth speakers.

The picture is truly brilliant. Its clear, crisp and bright with a wide viewing angle. I was a little surprised that the picture doesnt fill the entire frame when in TV mode, there’s a small dark border around the top and sides of the image as well as a dark band at the bottom where the touchscreen buttons reside. I was pleasantly surprised that the reflective mirrored surface didnt reflect the surroundings while watching TV. As promised, the Sylvox bathroom TV mirror had no issues with fogging up, although the environment we tested it in doesnt get extremely steamy either.

The connectors hang below the TV and can be tucked in the drywall to hide the wires for a wire-free look. If youre not up for drilling a hole or fishing wires through the walls, the dangling wires are a little unsightly, but not a deal-breaker. I prefer this design because you dont have to stand on your head with a flashlight and magnifying glass to find the right input for your device. The nice thing is, the design is adaptable to fit your needs, skills and devices.

Finally, I took a look in the mirror to see if there were any distortions or funhouse effects of a cheap mirror. In my opinion, this mirror was flawless.

What Is Primer Paint?

It’s often said a paint project is 90% prep and 10% painting. Consider applying primer an important part of the prep, because it can be critical to the overall results.

I once opted to skip primer when painting a desk, hoping to save time and money. This hasty decision turned my DIY project into a time-consuming mess, because the once-fresh coat of paint soon began to chip and peel.

Don’t make the same mistake. Learn, as I did, from industry pros Jeff Thorman of Home RenoVision DIY and Rachel Otto of Fleury Lumber. They told me all about primer paint, when to use it, and what can happen if you don’t.

What Is Primer Paint?

Primer paint is a coating applied to a surface before the actual paint. It’s formulated to stick to surfaces, seal porous materials or block stains. Some primers do all three, while others do one task better than another.

“A primer essentially [prepares] the wall to receive the paint,” Otto says. “There are acrylic [water-based], alkyd [oil-based] and shellac-based primers.”

While technically a paint, primer and paint are not interchangeable. “Primer is not as durable or attractive as paint, and paint does not have the adhesion and stain-blocking properties of primer,” Otto says. This comes down to each product’s chemistry.

Primer contains resins that penetrate and adhere to a surface to grip, seal and/or block stains. Paint also contains resins, but includes pigments for color and additives for durability as well. Pigments and additives also create paint’s thicker consistency and higher cost.

“Primer is cheaper to manufacture, because there are no pigments added,” Otto says.

What Is Primer Paint Used For?

Primer paint does three things:

• Seals porous surfaces: Primer resins seal new drywall, plaster or unpainted masonry (brick, concrete, stucco) to create a nonporous surface for paint. “Primer seals and primes the [surface] so it doesn’t suck up all your paint,” Thorman says.
• Adheres to the surface: Primer resins penetrate and interlock with the existing surface to create a solid bond.
• Blocks stains or existing paint colors: A stain-blocking primer under paint prevents stains from smoke, water damage or life in general. It also allows drastic color changes. “When changing from a dark or bright color to a neutral color, primer will help hide the older paint color,” Thorman says.

Do You Need To Prime Before Painting?

It depends. Always use primer when painting bare or previously unpainted surfaces. This includes new drywall or plaster, as well as bare metal, wood or masonry.

If painting cedar, redwood or knotty pine, prime first as well. Each contains tannins or sap that will seep through the paint surface if it’s not sealed first.

Before painting, prime any bare spots left from scraping and sanding during surface prep. Also, make sure to prime over any surface stains to prevent bleed-through, especially water and smoke stains.

It’s a good idea to prime before an extreme paint color change, too. However, previously painted surfaces may not require a primer coat before repainting. This is true if you’re repainting with the same or similar color, and if the existing coating is sound without peeling or chipping.

What Happens if You Don’t Prime Before Painting?

Three things, all of them bad.

Paint failure

Failing to prime bare or new surfaces can lead to chipping or peeling paint. It may last awhile, but will fail sooner than paint applied over primer.

Uneven paint color

Skipping primer before a drastic paint color change can result in splotchy coverage that will require more coats. “If you’re going from a red room to a white room, use a stain blocking primer so the red doesn’t show through,” Otto says.

Stain bleed-through

Paint is not formulated to block stains. If you don’t prime, no matter how many coats you apply, most stains will still be visible. “Even if you fix your leaky roof, the water stains on your ceiling will continue to show through paint unless sealed with a primer,” Otto says.

Unprimed wood that contains tannins will also bleed through paint.

Benefits of Priming Before Painting

Primer can lead to longer-lasting, better-looking results. It also can save money and time. “You use less paint overall, especially on porous surfaces,” Otto says, “and it helps your color stay true longer.”

How To Use Primer Paint

Primer paint is best used as a preparatory coating before paint to smooth the surface, create great adhesion and block stains. It is not meant as a finish topcoat.

How To Apply Primer Paint

Primer paint can be applied with a brush, roller or sprayer. “It goes on pretty much the same way as paint, but it’s thinner, so you’ll want less of it on your brush or roller to avoid drips,” Otto says.

She also recommends applying an even coat, because uneven coverage can show through the paint.

Priming Over Old Paint

Priming first can save money and time. “Primer is a lot cheaper than finish paint,” Thorman says. “In situations where you are going from a dark or bright color, a transition primer will save you money instead of extra coats of paint for coverage.”

If the old coating features some chipping or peeling paint, scrape these areas, then prime any bare spots. Once the primer dries, paint the entire surface.

I’ve Been Using the Kuat Bike Rack for 3 Years, and I Recommend It to Almost Everyone

I put off buying a good bike rack for too long. When I first started cycling and mountain biking, I balked at the idea that a bike rack could cost $500, $600, $800 or even more than $1,000. Kuat Bike Rack Features

The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 has a number of features that make it well worth its $630 price tag. Let’s take a look at some of the standout components.

Aluminum Construction

The Kuat Sherpa bike rack weighs in at a surprisingly low number: just 35 pounds for the 1.25-inch version and 32 pounds for the 2-inch version. This makes it easy to take your hitch receiver in and out, a welcome feature if you’re someone who takes your bike rack off when not in use, or moves it between different vehicles.

Expanding Cam System

One of my favorite things about the Sherpa rack is its expanding cam system. When you insert the rack into your vehicle’s hitch receiver, there’s a knob you turn to the right in order to tighten the fit to the interior walls of the receiver. This eliminates movement and rattle in the hitch receiver, making for a quieter ride and peace of mind knowing your bike rack isn’t bouncing around as you drive.

Folds Up and Tilts Down

If you leave your bike rack on your car when you’re not toting bikes, you can fold it up to reduce the length of the rack. I highly recommend taking advantage of this feature, particularly in parking lots, where a driver may hit the rack. The rack also tilts down to allow access to your vehicle’s trunk. This feature is absolutely clutch, for lack of a better word, because it means you can reach into your cargo area without having to take the bikes off of the rack.

A feature I never use but is worth calling out is the foot-assist pivot. When the rack is in its folded-up position, you can use your foot to release the pin and fold the rack down with one hand. I suppose this is a helpful feature if you have your hands full, but I guess I’ve never found myself in a situation where I can’t put something down and use two hands to fold the rack down.

Locking Hitch Pin and Bike Lock Included

The Sherpa rack securely attaches to your vehicle, thanks to the including locking hitch pin. A locking hitch pin ensures that no one can steal the rack off of your vehicle when you’re not around. Kuat also includes a cable lock with the rack to protect your bikes from theft. The cable lock integrates with the rack and uses the same key as the locking hitch pin.

I still recommend purchasing a heftier bike lock to secure your bikes if you plan to leave them unattended. I lost a bike to theft once, so I may be a bit paranoid now, but I use the included Kuat cable lock plus three Kryptonite U-locks to secure my two bikes.

Adjustable Ratchet Arm

Locking your bike’s front tire into place couldn’t be easier. I can adjust the ratchet arm with one hand and fit it to my bike’s tire. Then, (with two hands) I press down on the arm to tightly lock the tire into place.

The ratchet arms can accommodate wheel sizes up to 29 inches, which covers just about all types of bikes, including mountain bikes. They can accommodate wheels as small as 20 inches, but any wheels in the 20- to 24-inch range will require an adapter.

Folding Tire Cradle and Rear Wheel Straps

The back wheel of your bike straps into the Sherpa like the closure on an early 2000s pair of rollerblades. But first, you have to fold up the rear tire cradles. They fold down when not in use to avoid unnecessary damage.

A common complaint about the Kuat Sherpa is that the rear wheel cradle can’t accommodate tires larger than 3 inches in width. While the 3-inch maximum covers all standard tire sizes, even for mountain bikes, the rising popularity of E-bikes and fat-tire bikes means this rack won’t work for all cycling enthusiasts.

The tire cradles and straps are the one weak point of this bike rack, in my opinion. Whereas the rest of the frame is constructed from aluminum, the rear tire setup is all plastic. Plastic, naturally, doesn’t have the longevity that aluminum has. Still, after three years of heavy use, the rear tire cradles and straps are working just fine.

How We Tested It

The Kuat Sherpa has been with me for three years and thousands of miles. The first part of its well-traveled life saw it on the rear of my trusty Subaru Outback, on which I toted bikes to several triathlon races throughout the state of Florida, to Ironman 70.3 Augusta, to South Florida’s surprisingly abundant but obviously man-made mountain biking trail systems and to many other places in the Southeast.

Now, my Kuat Sherpa rests in the hitch receiver of my Winnebago Revel, in which I live full-time. (Well, actually, it sits in an extender, which sits in the receiver, because the rack itself was not long enough to allow the rear van doors to open.)

I’ve toted several bikes with the Kuat Sherpa over the years, from a Trek hardtail (RIP, the one that was stolen) to the Marin hardtail I have now and my partner’s Specialized hardtail, my Cervelo triathlon race bike and my Felt road bike. All of these bikes have fit snugly into the rear tire cradles and under the ratchet arm for the front tire.

On pavement, gravel and rutted dirt roads alike, the Sherpa has remained snug in its receiver and has continued to perform fantastically. This product is a rare one: I truly have no complaints. It has met my needs and hasn’t given me any trouble.

For instance, it can handle bikes weighing up to 60 pounds in comparison to the Sherpa’s 40-pound-per-bike limit. This means it can handle some lighter-duty E-bikes in addition to rides with steel frames, if that’s your jam.

Additionally, the NV 2.0 supports wheelbases up to 50 inches (as opposed to 47 inches) and can accommodate tires up to 5 inches in width with Kuat’s Phat bike kit. It also includes an integrated bike repair stand, which allows you to easily give your bike the TLC it deserves after a day on the trails (or wherever you ride). All of these extras come with a price, literally and figuratively. Literally, the NV 2.0 costs about $850, so $200 more than the Sherpa. Figuratively, you’ll pay the price in weight: The NV weighs 52 pounds compared to the Sherpa’s 32 or 35 pounds.

Thule T2 Pro

The Thule T2 Pro X, in particular, is often compared to the Kuat Sherpa 2.0. It has similar specifications: The T2 Pro X is a tray-style rack available in a version that fits 2-inch and 1.25-inch hitches, accommodates wheels from 20 to 29 inches in diameter, fits tires up to 3 inches in width without an adapter and it folds up and tilts down.

This rack can hold slightly more weight than the Sherpa at 50 pounds per bike, and it fits slightly larger wheelbases (about 49 inches). It comes with a locking hitch pin but no integrated cable lock.

One big difference between the Thule T2 Pro X and the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 is that the trays on the Thule rack are adjustable. This means you can slide the trays laterally and lock them in custom positions to better fit your bike and/or center your bikes behind your vehicle. It’s also compatible with an extender that allows you to hold up to four bikes, whereas the Sherpa doesn’t have a compatible extender available.

Final Verdict

While the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 bike rack may not be the right choice for everyoneno product is perfect for every consumerI do believe it is one of the best and is a great option for most people.

If you ride road, time trial or mountain bikes with standard wheel sizes and tire sizes, the Sherpa 2.0 is a moderately priced, durable bike rack that is supremely easy to use and should last a lifetime. If you need to carry kid’s bikes, E-bikes or fat-tire bikes, I recommend looking into other options, as the Kuat isn’t the best equipped to handle those rides.

How Much Does Bathtub Refinishing Cost?

Dreaming of getting a new bathtub? It may start to feel more like a nightmare when you get estimates of $5,000 or more to replace the old one.

Luckily, when it comes to improving the look of dated or worn bathtubs, a few options are more budget-friendly. Instead of replacing a tub in one of my a rental properties, I refinished it myself, saving thousands of dollars.

With the help of two industry experts Nick Coletti from Superior Bathtub Refinishing and Nathan Oettinger from The Painted Otter Refinishers we’ll delve into tub refinishing options, the pros and cons of each, and what to expect for tub refinishing costs.

About the Experts

Nathan Oettinger owns The Painted Otter Refinishers, with locations in New York and Texas. He has more than 15 years of experience in the tub and tile refinishing business.

Nick Coletti owns Superior Bathtub Refinishing in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. He has more than 20 years of experience in the industry.

What Is Bathtub Refinishing?

Bathtub refinishing or resurfacing means covering an existing tub’s damaged or worn surface. This can be done in three ways: Painting, reglazing or with a fitted tub liner. There’s no demolition involved, and each makes the existing tub look like new.

Here’s what to expect from each refinishing option.

Painting

A DIY or handyperson project, painting a tub is just like it sounds, but with special prep and paint.

Most DIY kits will include a separate primer and topcoat product, or a two-part epoxy for a one-step process. These are made to withstand the intense moisture exposure of a bathtub. “Ordinary paints will not work,” Coletti says.

Results will vary, but this is generally a short-term solution. It buys you a little time before a more permanent fix, like reglazing (see below).

While it looks great at first, the paint on tubs will only last six months to a year with heavy use. You may get longer results in a low-use tub in a guest bathroom.

Reglazing

A professional bathtub refinishing service can reglaze a bathtub by applying a new topcoat layer. Reglazing is similar to painting, but uses professional-grade products for a much harder and durable finish with longer-lasting results.

“The products we use are designed to have a very high strength and a very high flexibility,” Oettinger says, “They often begin as industrial products that are then brought over to the tub refinishing industry and reformulated for use on bathtubs and tile. It’s very strong stuff.”

Reglazing also benefits from professional level prep and application. “The prep work really separates a DIY job from a pro, because that will determine the performance of the coating,” Oettinger says.

So how long will a reglazing job last? “At least 10 years, at a minimum,” Coletti says, “but you could get 20 years depending on the use.”

Fitted tub liner

This refinishing option is also a pro service, often offered by large, national companies. Unlike painting or reglazing, a fitted tub liner is a new plastic shell that adheres over the existing tub. Acrylic and PVC are the most commonly used materials.

Company representatives come to your home and take careful measurements. A tub liner is manufactured to fit your exact tub and shipped, which can take several weeks. When it arrives, workers return to install the liner with special adhesive. This step can be done in a day.

Acrylic tub liners installed by a reputable company can last 10 to 20 years. PVC liners may last up to 10 years.

What Does Bathroom Refinishing Cost?

It can range from $150 to more than $5,000, depending on the method. Here we break down the costs for each refinishing option.

Painting

DIY kits are generally less than $150, depending on the brand. The cost of the kit is pretty close to the total project cost, because all or most of the necessary materials and tools are included.

Some extra expenses may include cleaning agents, sandpaper and a canister mask.

Painting a tub yourself is definitely the most economical tub refinishing option, which is why I love using it for my rental properties. It’s an inexpensive way to get a tub looking clean and new, but I know it will only last so long before needing to be replaced.

Reglazing

Expect to pay between $350 to $600. This will depend on where you live and the reglazing companies available in your area. Oettinger’s company charges $450 in Texas and $550 in New York for the same service. Coletti says these costs can climb to $900 in Boston.

Because there’s little oversight in this industry, beware of new companies with unusually inexpensive prices. Look for established companies with lots of four- and five-star reviews when making your choice.

Fitted tub liner

The most expensive tub refinishing option, tub liners can cost thousands. “Pricing for a tub liner in my area [in New York] ranges from around $1,500 to as much as $4,000,” Oettinger says, “When you’re looking at a tub and surround, anywhere from $4,500 to as much as $10,000.”

These costs will largely depend on the company, bathtub style and liner material used. Acrylic tub liners are the most popular choice due to their superior durability, but they cost more. Expect to pay $700 to $1,400 for an acrylic tub liner and less for PVC.

I love a little boho style. Even when I lived in a midcentury modern house, I’d find ways to layer in the lived-in, eclectic feel of bright color, wild prints and soft edges. A little bit country, a little bit rock n’ roll, a little bit world traveler.

Bohemian interior design just feels like a comfortable but never lazy mix. It naturally feels unique to your space, because it reflects the world you live in.

The term Bohemian refers to people originating from Bohemia, the largest region of the Czech Republic. It contains lots of historic outposts and the densest concentration of people in the nation. Bohemian style is known for its free-flowing, artistic, eclectic look and feel.

“When I think of Bohemian style, I think of the queen of Bohemian vibes: Stevie Nicks [of Fleetwood Mac],” says Lindsay Boudreaux, proprietor, creative director and interior designer at Shotgun Double Interior Design.

To capture the feel, Boudreaux says to think of soft colors, plants, handmade items like macram hangings and lamps covered in silk scarves. “There’s a breezy, loose, comfortable nature to how a room is composed, and nothing is too precious,” she says.

On a mass-market scale, one retail environment that exudes the bohemian vibe is Anthropologie’s home department. For something more cheap-chic, look no further than Justina Blakeney’s Jungalow collab at Target stores.

What Is Bohemian Design?

The great thing about the everything-goes aesthetic is that, well, a lot of things go. But to really nail the look, which should be more casual refinement than total flea market, check out these designer tips:

Color

“Bohemian interiors often feature a rich and vibrant color palette,” Lovato says. “Earthy tones, jewel tones and warm hues are commonly used. The color scheme is diverse and may include deep reds, oranges, purples, greens, and blues.”

Patterns and textures

“Mixing patterns is a hallmark of bohemian design,” Lovato says. “Floral, geometric and ethnic patterns are often combined harmoniously. Textures are crucial for adding depth and interest.”

Furniture

Bohemian furniture tends to be a mix of styles, often including vintage and handcrafted pieces, Lovato says. Furniture with distressed or reclaimed finishes are a yes.

Art

“Boho spaces are adorned with an abundance of art, including paintings, tapestries and wall hangings,” Lovato says. Sticking to one style won’t get you the look you crave, so don’t be afraid to mix it up. Art can also take the form of handmade Moroccan lanterns or macram plant hangers.

Lighting

Soft and ambient lighting is key to creating a cozy atmosphere, another hallmark of boho design, Lovato says. “Consider using string lights, lanterns and unique fixtures with warm-toned bulbs,” she says. It’s OK to get quirky; floor lamps and table lamps with unconventional designs work.

Cultural influences

Bohemian style often incorporates elements from various cultures, like Persian rugs, Moroccan lanterns or Asian-inspired decor. Handcrafted and artisanal items, including ceramics and textiles, add authenticity to the space.

Open and eclectic spaces

Bohemian interiors are often characterized by open, inviting spaces. Cluttered yet systematic arrangements contribute to the lived-in and collected-over-time feel, Lovato says.

Mining your collections may yield a lot of useful decor items for this look, so it’s a great time to reuse and recycle. But if you’re looking to pick up a few new pieces to enliven your space, consider these designer details:

Tap into texture

Think Moroccan rugs, Turkish kilims and textured throws, says Artem Kropovinsky, founder and interior designer at Arsight. “These add depth and warmth to any space,” he says.

Call in color

“Color has a fundamental role to play in bohemian interiors,” Kropovinsky says. Think of ones that might not be on the traditional radar, from deep purple to fiery orange.

Go global

If you’re a world traveler, here’s your chance to show off. Kropovinsky says to display pieces from travels, like a handwoven basket from Africa or a South American tapestry.

Play with pattern

Consider patterns in moderation. Start with table runners, lampshades and small rugs, Kropovinsky says.

Be natural

“Indoor plants are a staple in bohemian design,” Lovato says. “They not only bring nature indoors but also add a refreshing and lively element to the space.”

Not a green thumb? Bring in natural jewel tones to bring outdoors in.

Kick back

Boho is the design of the papasan chair, the conversation pit and even a slouchy beanbag chair, so pull up a chair and have a kiki. “Low-level seating, floor cushions and oversized sofas are common,” Lovato says. Keep your eyes peeled for slouchy silhouettes when you shop.

What To Know About Portable Power Stations

Take that noisy generator off the back of the truck. There’s no need to yell at your coworkers over the drone of an engine, placate angry neighbors in the early morning hours or deal with gas and diesel messes and maintenance. Portable power stations have finally become a practical alternative.

Thanks to rapidly evolving tech and consumer demand, these battery-powered generators are quiet, clean, reliable, maintenance free and powerful enough to run nearly every tool in the shed. They’re changing the game for professional trades, recreational vehicles and home backup power.

My partner and I tested a dozen models over the last year, in tasks ranging from clearing our quarter-acre lot with an electric lawnmower and weed whacker to mobile construction work to running an off-grid refrigerator for weeks at a time. We’ve also watched the technology ramp up significantly.

Whether you’re trying to power an off-grid or mobile worksite, here’s what we’ve learned about choosing a portable power station capable of handling your needs.

What Is a Portable Power Station?

Portable power stations, aka portable solar generators, are rechargeable battery banks bundled with a charger, inverter, built-in solar charge controller and various outlets.

Most portable power stations can be recharged from wall outlets, solar panels, or while driving via the vehicle’s 12-volt outlet or a direct current to direct current (DC to DC) charger setup.

Types of Portable Power Stations

Portable power stations are classified by capacity, battery composition and inverter strength.

Smaller “power banks” can fit in a purse or backpack to recharge your phone or laptop. Larger power stations can run trailers, tools and home/shop back-up power systems.

Capacity in watt hours (Wh)

To figure out what capacity you need, add the wattage of your tools and the duration you’ll be using them. A 2,000-Wh station can run 1,000-Wh of tools for two hours. A 1,000-Wh drill running for six minutes will use 100 Wh of power.

Battery composition

Nearly all portable power stations use lithium batteries with NiMiNmCoO2 (NMC) or LiFePo4 (LFP) technology. Most companies are moving toward LFP because it’s less prone to thermal runaway and can be charged/discharged 5,000 cycles on average, vs. NMC’s 500-ish cycles.

There is also at least one manufacturer using solid-state lithium technology.

Inverter capabilities

Make sure a portable power station’s inverter can handing your tools’ maximum alternating current (AC) watt output, which is different than watt-hours, as well as their max surge.

What Can Portable Power Stations Do?

• Provide 240V AC, 120V AC or 12V DC power for tools and appliances.
• Lessen your impact on job sites by eliminating noise and exhaust.
• Reduce your carbon footprint by replacing gas and diesel-powered generators.
• Save money on electricity by recharging from solar panels.
• Save time and money over gas generators, because they’re maintenance free.

What Can’t Portable Power Stations Do?

• Be used when ambient temperatures are below freezing or higher than 104 degrees.
• Be transported on airlines, unless specially prepared.
• Provide more than 25 amps of 240V power.

We eagerly awaited the 2024 release of Anker’s Solix F3800 because it’s one of the first power stations with a 240V outlet. It can run pretty much any 120V power tool, including welders that draw less than 25 amps, and even boost an EV’s range by eight or so miles. It also has a 30-amp outlet for trailers/RVs.

It runs most power tools as well as Goal Zero’s Skylight, a 6,000-lumen work light that illuminates 300-sq.-ft. with a strikingly pleasant color temperature.

Anker Solix F2000

If your power demands lower, Anker’s Solix F2000 is more affordable and easier to lift in and out of a vehicle. It also features a 30-amp plug so it can power basic systems in a trailer/camper throughout the day or overnight.

Bluetti AC180

Compact and easily portable at 38 pounds, Bluetti’s AC180 will keep a Bluetooth speaker, phone and tool batteries charged all day. I can also run a drill and other lighter-duty tools on it.

The mattress is best suited for those looking for temperature regulation, pressure relief, motion separation and support. How We Tested It

Just as I (and other Family Handyman staffers) have done with previous mattress testing, I had the Purple Restore Cool Touch Hybrid Mattress delivered to my own home, set it up myself and slept on it every night for over a month to tell you what its really like. As great as mattress stores are for feeling a bed in person, its hard to tell how a mattress will truly perform with just five to ten minutes of touch.

Delivery and Setup

The Purple Restore Mattress arrived at my door via two delivery personnel. I scheduled the delivery in advance, as I had to be home to receive the delivery. And while Mattress Firm advertises the mattress as a boxed mattress, it did arrive rolled in a plastic sleeve, which the delivery people kindly took to my bedroom, so I didnt have to lift or carry it. (A plus since the mattresss shipping weight is 148 pounds.) I did test the mattress in a King size, so perhaps thats why it arrived in a long, rolled form. Nonetheless, it was compressed and compact, which made rearranging the room and putting in a new bedframe a breeze, as the mattress sat conveniently out of the way until I was ready to unroll it.

Now, for the unrolling. The Purple Restore Cool Touch Mattress arrived in a thick, airtight seal and protective plastic. I unzipped the plastic bag and removed the rolled mattress, then it took quite a bit of cutting to get all the plastic off the mattress so it could unroll and inflate. I also had to take extra caution not to cut the mattress as I inched through the plastic casing. After about 15 minutes of cutting through plastic, the mattress was finally free and unrolled automatically onto the frame.

While it was difficult for me to locate instructions regarding how long to let the mattress inflate, I did chat with a representative at Purple to learn that it only takes a few hours for the mattress to expand after opening. However, it can take an additional day or two for the mattress to fully take its shape. Thankfully, its okay to sleep on after just a few hours (I waited about four hours), even if its still expanding for a few days after opening.

Testing the Mattress

It was about midnight when I finally laid down to experience the Purple Restore Mattress. (Yes, I foolishly unwrapped the mattress late in the evening after storing away my other mattress.) The King size mattress has standard dimensions of 80 by 76 inches and a height of 11-1/2 inches, so its plenty roomy for my partner and me to share without rolling into each other throughout the night.

I did notice that the surface of the mattress was cool to the touch, almost like a moisture-wicking athletic tee, but softer. The top layer also gave way quite a bit as I touched and sat on the mattress, providing a cushioned feel. While I prefer a softer, sunken-in feel when it comes to mattresses, my partner prefers a firmer mattress. After a few nights with the Purple Restore, we both decided that we found the mattress to be very comfortable. So, like most hybrid mattresses, its a good in-between for people who like a mattress that has plenty of cushion on top and firm support on bottom. Its also great for people who arent sure what they like or for sleeping partners who prefer different firmness levels in a mattress.

After having slept on the mattress for over a month, I am impressed with how my sleep has improved. Yes, my partner and I have more room (we upgraded from a Queen mattress to a King), but I also find myself tossing and turning less in the night and falling asleep faster when I lay down. And while it has only been a month of using the mattress, it has maintained its original shape thus far. Ill be checking in around six months to let you know how it holds up.

The RestorePlus and RestorePremier also have an additional edge support system to further prevent sinking and sagging. While there arent many differences between the RestorePlus and RestorePremier, Purple says the RestorePremier has the most advanced cooling and comfort technology for extra-hot sleepers.

If youre in the market for a cooling hybrid mattress of medium firmness, the Purple Restore Cool Touch Mattress is one of my favorite hybrid mattresses Ive slept on. Its ideal for sleepers who need temperature regulation and for those who sleep on their sides or find themselves moving frequently throughout the night.

I also like that its compatible with an adjustable base, so if I decided to upgrade my bedframe to an adjustable base, I can continue to use the mattress. If youre someone who reads or watches TV frequently in bed or suffers from sleep apnea, then an adjustable base may be for you.
