Summers in an old duplex in New England are never fun. Without central air conditioning, we’ve had to rely on window units to keep our two-story apartment cool. While the one in our living room has been helpful at keeping the lower level cool, our upstairs bedroom suffers as the heat rises. And since I’m a hot sleeper, it’s incredibly difficult for me to fall asleep unless the room feels like an ice box (and none of our home air conditioners have lived up to the challenge). Not to mention, the noise they made would keep me up all night. So when I got the opportunity to do a Windmill Air Conditioner review, I jumped on the chance.
Choosing a window unit that is eco-friendly, whisper-quiet and nice-looking was a top priority. Luckily, Windmill Air checks all those boxes. So I put my husband to work installing the unit in our bedroom and spent the next few weeks testing its ability to keep the room cool (and the bevvy of unique features).
What is the Windmill Air Conditioner?
The Windmill Air Conditioner is a modern window unit designed to be easy to install, efficient, quiet and eco-friendly. Like all air conditioners, this unit alters the temperature and humidity of a room to more comfortable conditions. The unit is available in three sizes, each with a higher BTU and coverage area. They come with a standard white panel, but there are four other color options to add more flair to your room.
One free activated charcoal filter is included with your purchase, and it lasts around two to three months, making it perfect for summer usage. Additionally, there is an option to subscribe and receive filters based on your usage level, from all year to just summer months.
The install kit arrives pre-assembled for an easy installation. The antimicrobial-protected mesh and activated carbon filter last three months and are washable. The convenient cosmetic side panels keep the unit insulated, efficient and sleek-looking. The unit, although app-controlled, also comes with a remote, so you don’t have to leave the bed or couch when adjusting settings.
Windmill Filters
Besides their A/C unit, Windmill offers customized filters for central air conditioning units. Senior Shopping Editor, Caroline Lubinsky, tried them out in her own home and was impressed.
“I took the quiz to see what kind of filter Windmill would recommend,” she said. “It didn’t take long to complete, and it asked questions about pets, air quality, and allergies to give me the best recommendation for my home.”
Caroline mentioned that the inside of the filter feels high-quality, but she wishes the brand added a label on the outside saying which filter she’s using.
When it’s time to replace your air filter, Windmill sends a reminder text (and the next round of filters if you’ve signed up for reoccurring delivery). If you’re tired of shlepping over to Home Depot for new air filters, this is a great way to save time (and frustration).
Windmill Air Conditioner Product Features
The Windmill Air Conditioner ensures the most comfortable night’s sleep, even in the hottest rooms. One of the most unique features? The air blows up and out into the room at the perfect angle for better cooling, adding to its efficiency. This works effectively because, as we know, heat rises. In addition to its impressive efficiency, the Windmill Air is also eco-friendly, offsetting the carbon footprint of every Windmill A/C purchased.
Even without the WhisperTech feature, each unit is still impressively quiet, running smoothly and gently in the background as you sleep or relax. The convenient remote also makes it easy to control the unit from a distance, but with the app, you can control the AC from anywhere, whether you’re traveling or forgot to turn off the A/C when you left the house for work. With the app, change the fan’s speed, choose between three modes and even tell the current room temperature.
How We Tested It
To give a proper Windmill Air Conditioner review, I knew I had to use it for a few weeks while I waited for the weather to get warmer. Once the room started to get a few degrees too warm, my husband brought it upstairs to set up. As expected, the setup for the unit was unbelievably easy. It took about five minutes to get everything up and running.
My first impression of the Windmill Air Conditioner is how beautiful it looks, which is something I never thought I’d say about an A/C unit. However, the sleek, modern lines, the bright white color and the unique mesh front cover give it such a stylish feel. As someone who appreciates the aesthetics of their bedroom, I’m happy to say I no longer feel like my A/C unit is an eyesore all summer long.
As for how it works, I’m exceptionally impressed. The remote is easy to use, and a simple press of the button turns the A/C on. I can change the modes from my side of the bed, and the LED lights on the unit allow me to see what I’m changing to. Once we turned on the unit and got ready for bed, I knew I hit the jackpot. Previously, all of our A/C units were too loud. I have sensitive hearing, and any rattling that sounds out of place would keep me up all night. The Windmill Air Conditioner is the quietest window unit I have ever owned.
Because the unit blows air upwards, I find that it cools the room much faster than any of my other units. I can also tell how crisp and clean the air feels at night. My husband has even noted that he doesn’t wake up feeling stuffy like before. It’s clear the Windmill Air Conditioner is a top pick for the best window unit.

FAQ
How heavy is the Windmill air conditioner?
It depends on which size of the Windmill Air Conditioner you purchase, but the average weight of the unit is around 60 pounds. This can be a bit heavy for some people, so be sure to have someone assist you during the installation process.
Is there such a thing as a high-efficiency air conditioner?
Window-mounted air conditioners are not as efficient as central air conditioners, but it’s still possible to find models with features that make them more efficient. Look for units with double-sided insulated panels and eco-mode options. Additionally, window air conditioners that use 10% less energy than the federal standard are eligible for an Energy Star label, so look for models with that label. The Windmill units all have 2x Energy Star Insulation.
Does the Windmill AC need a bracket?
No, you don’t need a bracket for any of the Windmill AC units. The screws included are enough to support your unit.
What Other Reviewers Had to Say
“The Windmill is the perfect blend of style and function,” says verified purchaser Nikoly B. “It’s quiet, and the eco feature is so clever for when you’re trying to keep a room cool but not freezing. For reference, the small unit keeps our master bedroom cool, and if we have the door open it will maintain the temperature of our 800sq foot one-story home. The best part is the wifi which has been a lifesaver for my pet when we are out of the house or traveling. If you’re thinking of buying it, do it. Plus you’d be buying from a small business.”
Claire S. praises the clean air saying, “I love knowing that the air in our house is cleaner and my allergies have noticeably improved since starting to used these”
Other reviewers, like Madlen N., love how stylish it looks. “Probably the quietest, prettiest and easiest to install A/C I have ever purchased. I love it so much. It just looks amazing in the window. The design is so plain but elegant in my opinion. I’m so happy, and I wish I needed more for the bedrooms. Once I do I will be buying more from this company. Hands down, worth every penny.”
Final Verdict
If you’re looking for a window unit that will efficiently cool down a room in your home, has smart features and looks absolutely stunning, then you’ve found the perfect window unit. The installation was a breeze, and every night we’ve used it, it’s made the room significantly cooler in a short amount of time compared to other units we’ve previously owned.
One of my favorite features is the new central air filter subscription that allows you to constantly have fresh filters available, ensuring you extend the life of your air conditioner and keep the air quality in your home clean. You can order filters for the entire year, which provides four filters, through the fall with three filters or just for the summer months with two filters.
Overall my Windmill Air Conditioner review is off-the-charts positive. I can confidently say that I will use this unit for years to come and for every single blistering hot summer day.
