The Importance of the Right Glue for the Job
Adhesives are unsung heroes in the world of home improvement, for pros and DIYers alike. No matter what materials you need to stick together, there’s always one for the job. So many, in fact, that choosing the right adhesive can sometimes be confusing.
Glue is an adhesive, but not all adhesives are glues. Glues are derived from natural sources (plant and animal byproducts), while adhesives are synthetic. But in everyday usage, the words are practically synonymous. Manufacturers use them interchangeably, and so do we.
Manufacturers make shopping for adhesives a little less perplexing by listing best uses on product labels, but some overlap. You can bond wood with carpenter’s glue, polyurethane, epoxy and even cyanoacrylate (AKA super glue) in a pinch. Moreover, some really strong adhesives like silicone caulk are marketed as sealants. These are bulky, sticky substances intended for filling gaps and not technically adhesives.
Because it’s just a matter of time before you need to glue something together, get to know what types of glue (ahem…adhesives) are available and what each one does best.
