ADT is a security company that has been in business for more than 145 years and has more than six million customers in the U. S.
It all started in 1874. After a break-in at ADT founder Edward Calahan’s home in Brooklyn, N.Y., Calahan created a “call-box” that used the telegraph to summon help from neighbors when there was an intruder in a home. Fifty homes quickly signed up for the service. This became the first residential security system network. ADT stands for “American District Telegraph.”
While today’s security systems include window and door sensors, a security panel and usually a security camera or two to detect intruders, ADT provides extra products and services that may even surprise long-time customers. This includes a wide range of smart devices that can protect your home from thieves, fires, floods and more.
ADT App
The ADT app lets you monitor your home’s security, no matter where you are. It can also be used along with Alexa and Google Assistant to automate your smart devices for better home security.
For instance, you can use the app to automate your home’s lights to turn on and off while you’re on vacation to make potential thieves think someone is at home. The app works with ADT security devices, too. We’ll talk more about how that works below.
Doorbell Cameras
ADT now offers doorbell cameras to add to your system. Doorbell cameras are just what they sound like. They can be used as a regular doorbell, but feature a built-in camera. This camera connects with the ADT app so you can see who is at your door and talk to them, no matter where you are.
ADT Medical Alert
If one of your family members is elderly or disabled, the ADT Medical Alert service may be a great addition to your security system. A wrist sensor detects when someone falls, whether at home or not, and can call for help automatically. The sensor uses GPS, so the first responders can more easily find and help the wearer.
Panic Buttons
You may already know that the ADT control panel has an emergency button that can call for help. But did you know that you can also purchase individual panic buttons from ADT? These can be worn around the neck or wrist or be clipped to a belt, so you can call for help no matter where you are in your home.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Every home should have smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. ADT offers these devices, but with a twist.
When unsafe conditions are detected, the security system calls for help so first responders can get to your home quickly. The smoke detectors feature advanced sensors that can differentiate between burnt food and a real home fire, so there are fewer false alarms than with typical smoke detectors. Plus, you can get alerts through the app when smoke or heat is detected in your home.
Flood Sensors
Just an inch of water in your home can cost homeowners as much as $20,000 in repairs. Often, the sooner you stop the water, the lesser the damage. Flood sensors offered by ADT can detect a leak from a water heater or pipes or an overflow from the washing machine or dishwasher, then alert you via the app.
Outdoor Security Cameras
Outdoor security cameras are useful for more than just catching criminals. Have you ever wished you could check on what’s making that noise outside in the middle of the night without leaving your bed? ADT outdoor security cameras make that possible.
These cameras allow you to see live footage using the app. If it’s a pesky raccoon or the neighbor’s dog, you can also use the app to shoo it away using the camera’s two-way audio feature.
Indoor Security Cameras
Outdoor security cameras are obviously useful, but have you thought about cameras for inside the home?
Indoor cameras can help you keep an eye on children in the next room, monitor teens when you’re not home, or even keep track of your pets while you’re at work, all with the help of the ADT app. These cameras also have two-way audio, so you can speak to whomever is in the room using the app.
