How To Use a Level Over Long Distances

A 2-ft. level works just fine on small projects like installing small sections of wall tile, building closet walls and installing single cabinets. But when you have to quickly and accurately set elevations over long distances for bigger jobs like building decks, digging trenches and setting concrete form boards, this trusty ol level is out of its league.

Any time you try to pencil a long level line by repositioning that 2-ft., or even 4-ft., level end to end, youll build in an error that magnifies as you extend the line. You can use several tools indoors and out to improve your leveling results. Here, I’ll show you the best techniques and tools for short, medium and long distance leveling.

Combine a Level with a Straight Board

Combining a straight board and a 2-ft. level is a good yet inexpensive way to level shorter distances from 4 to 15 feet. For tasks like laying out deck beam heights (pictured above), set your 2-ft. level on top of a perfectly straight 24 to extend its reach accurately. Two-by-six and 28 lumber is too heavy to hold steady. To make a lot of measurements quickly, strap the level to the 24 with duct tape or an elastic cord.

But it has to be a straight board. I can’t emphasize that enough. Yes, it’s still cheaper than buying a new level, but chances are you won’t be able to get any random 2×4 out of the cheapest pile at the home center. To find the straightest one, sight down the edges. You can always trim a board on a table saw for a straight edge.

If you’re using this method for mounting deck beams, pencil the height of the wall ledger onto each deck post.

Use a Line Level

How To Use A Level Over Long Distances Fh01apr 01906006 Ksedit Callouts

For jobs where absolute accuracy is less essential, like digging slopes in trenches, use an inexpensive line level. Hook it directly onto a strong string, like nylon masons line. For the level to work properly, use only one line level per string, draw the line very tight, and ensure theres little wind to blow the level around.

Set drainage slopes by measuring from a level string line. Tap in a reference stake and then a series of measuring stakes 6 feet apart along the trench. Check the trench depth for the proper drainage slope by tying off the string line level at each perimeter measuring stake and measuring the depth of that spot in the trench.

Measure off the string line once the level reads true and stabilizes. The line level is true when the bubble settles between the hairlines.

Electronic Water Levels

How To Use A Level Over Long Distances Fh01apr 02279005 Ksedit Callouts

The simple principle behind a water level is that the water columns inside two open ends of a single tube will be level with each other. Using crude water levels (like a section of garden hose) requires two people. For solo work, we recommend you buy an electronic water level. Its highly accurate, has a 25-foot working radius and allows you to work alone and around corners because it honks when the water in the working tube is level with the reference line back at the unit.

First, calibrate the electronic water level by attaching it plumb and level to a plywood scrap. Fill the tube with water and bleed air out of the line. Calibrate by loosening both tube clamps, turning on the electronic level and raising the working tube to the reference line. The units horn should sound as the water in the working tube touches the reference line. Add red, water-based food coloring for easier viewing when filling the tube with water. Clamp off both tube ends with the clips provided so that water doesnt suddenly spill out.

If you first establish a reference mark at the level and pencil many layout lines around a room (including around corners), you can connect the marks with chalk lines. Measure up (or down) from any line to accurately set acoustical ceiling track, install level wainscoting or add lumber wall blocking for hanging cabinets.

How To Use A Level Over Long Distances Fh01apr 02279006 Ksedit Callouts

For best results, avoid water leaks from the water level by clipping the end of the working tube when not actually using it for a measurement. Take care not to step on the tube as you move around a room.

If water leaks or air bubbles enter the tubing, you must refill the tube and recalibrate the unit to maintain accuracy.

Laser Levels for Heights and Very Long Distances

How To Use A Level Over Long Distances Fh01apr 02279008 Ksedit Callouts

Use a rotary laser level for tasks like setting concrete form boards, cutting fence post tops or building retaining walls. The rotary laser shoots a level beam in a continuous circle like a lighthouse. Rotary laser levels are the fastest tools for accurately establishing leveling marks (in direct view of the laser) anywhere on a building site. For big-time savings, rent a self-leveling rotary laser.

Rotary lasers work in tandem with a target laser detector. The lasers continuous beam is too faint to be seen in daylight, so a sensor in the laser detector will chirp when it detects the beam. Mounted on an elevation rod (the kind surveyors use), the laser detector slides up and down the rod until it finds the laser beam to establish the proper elevation.

For the fastest results in setting footing form boards, have one person use the elevation rod to find the laser beam and a second person set the form boards. Prepare a form board for placement by lifting it against a support stake and driving a couple of 3-in. deck screws through the board, ready to set into the stake. Once the laser detector chirps to signal level, drive the screws home.

Intex Above-Ground Pool Review: Here’s What We Think

Ever since I moved away from California, I’ve missed having a swimming pool in the backyard. Lounging in the water was my strategy for surviving the sweltering summers. It also created happy memories that I fondly remember today.

So when we finally finished renovating the inside of our old house we’ve been working on for the last two years, I was excited to turn my sights to the outside. We couldn’t afford an in-ground pool, nor would one be practical for our location. So, we decided to go with an Intex Ultra XTR above-ground swimming pool.

Above-ground pools are the perfect entry point into the pool lifestyle because of their affordability, easy installation, and placement flexibility,” says Alicia Toedter, Education and Content Leader at Leslie’s consumer pool and spa care. “In 2022, the average cost of an in-ground pool was $66,500, which is nearly 20 times the cost of an average above-ground pool.

So far, our Intex above-ground pool has been a great choice. Our friends and family also couldn’t be happier. As one neighborhood kid said, “It’s cool because you can go from no pool to a paradise in a day!”

But, this pool is still a big commitment, and there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. Here’s what we learned through the course of setting it up and using it, and who we recommend this pool for.

What is the Intex Above Ground Pool?

The Intex Ultra XTR Deluxe above-ground pool is a removable swimming pool that you can set up in your yard. It comes as a kit, which includes a metal frame, liner, filter and accessories.

Intex makes above-ground pools in a range of shapes and sizes. We chose the 12-foot-by-24-foot model, which is their second-largest because we have ample yard space and didn’t want to feel cramped with friends and family over for gatherings. We also opted for the salt water system feature to cut down on the chlorine smell.

How We Tested It

Before beginning the pool setup, we consulted Toedter and Rafi Friedman, president of Coastal Luxury Outdoors, to avoid common mistakes. Their number one piece of advice was to choose the location wisely; Ideally, a place where the ground can be easily flattened, with a few extra feet of clearance beyond the pool dimensions, and all of the rocks and debris removed from the area. They also suggested a spot that’s close to the needed power and water connections and in clear view of our home (for safety).

“The assembly can be a weekend DIY project, however, many new pool owners may hire a contractor to do the site prep work for them,” says Toedter.

Prepping the Site

Even though we started with level ground, prepping it proved to be the most arduous part of setting up the pool. That took up one of our weekends and included adding a bed of sand and renting a sod roller to get the surface as flat and level as possible, especially under the support brackets. To make matters more tedious, we live in a rural area prone to dust storms, so we had to wait several more weeks for the spring winds to subside, before even attempting to put it together. But eventually, the site was ready and the winds stopped, and it was time for the fun part of the task.

Unboxing the Pool

We didn’t quite realize the magnitude of what we were getting into until the freight truck pulled up. The driver unloaded the boxed pool via a lift gate and a pallet jack. Altogether it weighed more than 400 pounds. But the pool parts were in two boxes, so once we detached them from the pallet and removed the shrink wrap, we were able to lug the boxes separately, with a regular dolly, to where we needed them. The whole unboxing process took around 20 minutes.

Setting the Frame and Filter

To assemble the frame, we enlisted the help of the neighbors. It took four of us to hold up the side walls while clicking on the leg stands. In hindsight, one more person would have been helpful. But all in, it took just over two hours to have the frame and liner together.

It took another hour or so to assemble the filter. The instructions for that were a bit scattered, but we were able to figure it out without too much trouble. Note: you must also buy 77 pounds of sand (No. 20, silica) for the filter, as that’s not included. And if you get the salt version, you’ll also need 210 pounds of salt (3,000 ppm, sodium chloride, 99.4%+ pure).

Filling the Pool

On its website, Intex touts that this pool is “ready for water in 90 minutes.” What they don’t mention is how long it takes to add 8,400 gallons of water. No big deal, except for our neighbor’s kid, who had been hanging around all day in his swim trunks waiting in anticipation. He ended up having to come back the next day to do the inaugural belly flop since it took around 12 hours to get it topped off.

We have a well, so the utility bill wasn’t an issue, but if you live in a place where water is expensive, you might price out hiring a water truck to fill it. Also of note: The pool bows in the last few inches before it reaches the recommended fill height, which is normal, but a little unnerving.

Using The Pool

To kick off our exciting summer of pool time, we invited some neighbors, friends, and family over. The day included a lot of splashing, laughing, beach balls, foam noodle duels, and diving for quarters. In other words, it was a success. The pool held strong and everyone went home exhausted and happy.

The pool fits 10 people comfortably. While it feels quite durable, we’re still keeping the pets (and their claws) away, just in case. After using it, the cover was easy to put on with two people, and the bottom tie-down loops were convenient. An important note: The pool cover is only meant for keeping out debris, and NOT a safety cover.

So far, our days with high winds haven’t been affecting the pool, but if we’re lax on properly tightening the cover, the winds can get under it. The filter has been working perfectly, keeping the water clean and clear. There’s also a sleep mode on the pump, so we can stop it while swimming. It does require some maintenance and ongoing materials expenses (of course), like testing and treating the water and buying chemicals.

In terms of overall durability, it’s looking as if we’ll get years of fun out of it. The frame appears to be very rust-proof, though there are four hose clamps at the filter, which seem like they could potentially rust after a while. Not a big deal.

Pros

  • Large size for family and friends
  • Liner feels durable
  • Quality frame
  • Easy to set up, considering the size; no tools required (except flathead and Phillips screwdrivers for pump/filter clamps)
  • High-flow pump keeps water clear and clean
  • Looks sleek

Cons

  • Takes a lot of site preparation
  • Ladder could be more sturdy
  • Flat lot and plenty of yard required

FAQ

How long will an Intex above-ground pool last?

The pool has a two-year warranty. However, if maintained properly, it can last up to 15 years, says Friedman.

What is best to put under an Intex pool?

It depends on your yard and where you plan on putting it. Often a bed of sand will be the preferred medium, topped with the tarp that’s included with the pool.

Should I cover my Intex pool every night?

You don’t have to, but covering it will cut down on evaporation and keep debris and animals out of the water. “It helps streamline your day-to-day maintenance routine and can help save money on chlorine costs,” says Toedter.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

Overall, Intex pools get good reviews for quality vs. cost. Intex is considered a leading brand, with a reputation for longevity and pools that are easy to set up.

“These pools are surprisingly affordable compared to other above-ground pools, while still offering a lot of quality and durability,” says Friedman.

On Amazon and other consumer sites, some negative customer reviews mention poor customer service, shipping problems and difficulties with the pump. But overall, reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some mentioning more than eight years of longevity and counting, plus many others touting how much joy it’s brought their families.

Intex Above Ground Pool vs. Bestway Above Ground Pool

When it comes to this size of pool, Intex is the only option. The largest pool Bestway makes is the Power Steel Swim Vista Series, which measures 17-foot-by-10-foot and 42 inches deep. It’s considerably more affordable but also holds less than half of the water capacity. Otherwise, both are good brands, says Friedman.

“Intex pools are higher quality, though you’ll pay more for that quality,” Friedman explains. “Bestway is not a bad brand, though.”

Final Verdict

We highly recommend the Intex Ultra XTR for anyone who’s been longing to have a pool in their lives. The 12-foot-by-24-foot model is large enough to feel like a proper pool, but small enough to not be a maintenance hassle.

It’s not the cheapest above-ground pool on the market, but it’s affordable for its size, and with that extra cost comes increased quality and durability, which is important for something that is tasked with containing 8,000-plus gallons of water. It also has a nice aesthetic.

Getting the site prepped to install takes a bit of work, but that’s the case for any above-ground pool. If you don’t have nearly level ground to start with, it will likely require some formal excavation.

It also takes a bit of muscle to move the 400-plus-pounds of liner and frame into place but all things considered, it’s an easy DIY to set up, especially with the forward-thinking, tool-free frame design. It’s also pretty simple to take down to store for the winter if you live in a cold place as we do.

We anticipate this pool will last for many summer’s worth of enjoyment, while creating a lifetime of precious memories, especially for the neighborhood kids.

Why Is My Sewer Bill So High Right Now? Experts Weight In

I’ve been living on rural properties with well water and septic systems for most of my adult life, so I never wondered: “Why is my sewer bill so high?” In fact, I had no idea what a sewer bill really was until experts Al Ruggie and Josh Rudin of ASAP Restoration in Phoenix and Asif Bux of Calgary-based Comfort Union brought me up to speed.

“It’s related to the water bill, but it is literally a function of how much goes back down the sewer line,” Ruggie told me. It can fluctuate, but that depends on where you live and how the rate is calculated.

Ruggie shared his experience: “I recently planted more than 100+ trees, shrubs and ground covers. In Phoenix, Arizona, this requires around 10,000 gallons per month to keep them alive for 110+ degree days during the summer.” While his water bill was significantly higher during this period, his sewage bill stayed the same because the extra water was absorbed into the ground and never made it to the drain.

No one wants to pay more money on utilities than necessary, so if your sewer bill is higher than normal, you probably want to know why. You’ll find some possible reasons ahead.

What Is a Sewer Bill?

Bux explains that a sewer bill is distinct from a water bill, though they are often issued together. “Your water bill charges you for the water you use, measured in units such as gallons or cubic feet, whereas the sewer bill is for the treatment and disposal of wastewater. The sewer bill is calculated based on the volume of water that enters your home since most of this water eventually leaves through the sewer system.”

This may not be the case for everyone, however. This explanation doesn’t fit Ruggie’s experience, whose sewer bill remained unchanged despite a drastic increase in water usage. Rudin offers a reason for this: “There are some older neighborhoods (in Phoenix) that allow flood irrigation, and it’s possible that they have a different setup for their sewage bill.” Rudin confirms that a major leak that raised his water bill by over $1,000 had no effect on his sewer bill. This wouldn’t necessarily be the case in every community, however.

How Are Sewer Bills Calculated?

As an example, the City of San Mateo, CA levies a sewer service charge on the annual property tax bill. The city’s website states: “This charge is calculated directly from the volume of freshwater used by each parcel and the estimated intensity of the resulting wastewater. A per-dwelling unit fee also applies to residential properties, while the usage-based fee is significantly lower.”

To calculate a usage-based fee, the municipality must have a way of measuring sewage outflow, and not every community has a metering system in place that can do this. In such communities, the sewage bill is typically tied to the water bill, which means that the more water you use, the higher your sewage bill will be.

What Is a Normal Sewer Bill?

Some communities, such as Santa Cruz, CA where I live levy a flat rate sewer charge, but in communities where it’s based on water usage or metered directly, it can fluctuate from $20 to $140 per month. In these communities, a normal rate would likely be an average between these limits or about $80 per month.

What Could Be Causing My Sewer Bill Increase?

If you don’t pay a flat rate for sewer services, but instead pay a usage-based fee, you might be wondering: Why is my sewer bill so high this month? Bux suggests several reasons:

Increased Water Usage

If your household’s water consumption has spiked, this will directly impact your sewer charges. Activities such as filling a swimming pool, increased use of water-intensive appliances, or even leaks can lead to higher water usage.

Water Leaks

Undetected leaks in your plumbing system can significantly contribute to a higher sewer bill. Leaks in toilets, faucets, or even underground pipes can waste considerable water.

Faulty Metering

Sometimes, the problem lies with the water meter itself. A malfunctioning or inaccurate water meter can lead to incorrect billing.

Sewer Line Issues

Blockages or damages in your sewer line can also cause problems. Tree root intrusion, pipe collapse, or severe blockages can cause backups and lead to increased charges for maintenance and repairs.

Utility Rate Changes

The higher bill may not be due to increased water usage but to changes in your utility company’s rates. It’s worth checking if there have been recent increases in sewer rates or changes in billing policies.

Stormwater Infiltration

In some regions, stormwater can enter the sewer system, leading to higher volumes of water being processed. If your property has improper drainage systems or your area experiences heavy rainfall, this can contribute to higher sewer charges.

How to Reduce My Sewer Bill

If your community levies a flat rate for sewer usage, you shouldn’t have to worry about spikes in your bill, but if you’re charged a usage-based fee, you may be wondering how to reduce it. Bux has you covered with these recommendations:

Conduct a Water Usage Audit

Analyze your water usage patterns to identify any unusual increases. Perhaps, like Ruggie, you’ve been watering a new landscape, or maybe you’re trying to help your lawn survive a heat wave.

Inspect for Leaks

You don’t have to have a catastrophic leak to hike your water usage. A single dripping faucet or running toilet can waste gallons of water every day. Regularly check your plumbing system for leaks. Use dye tests to detect toilet leaks and watch for dripping faucets.

Conduct Regular Maintenance

Schedule routine inspections and maintenance of your sewer lines to prevent blockages and ensure they are in good condition.

Monitor Utility Bills

Keep an eye on your utility bills for any rate changes or unusual charges. The answer to the question “Why is my sewer bill so high?” might simply be that the utility company raised its rates, and these rate changes aren’t always published in places where you can easily find them.

FAQs

Is water and sewer the same bill?

It depends on where you live. Some communities base the sewer bill on water usage, and some don’t. If you aren’t sure, check with your local water authority.

Why is my sewer bill higher than my water bill?

This is normal in many communities. According to the Boothbay Harbor Sewage District in Maine, that’s because wastewater standards and the costs of treating wastewater have risen over the years.

Remove a Stubborn Oil Filter with This Genius Hack

Weve all done it overtightened an oil filter so much that its a bear to remove. If you think you can remove it by jamming a long screwdriver through the can and twisting, think again. The screwdriver will just rip the can open, and youll be drenched in oil. When youre done dealing with that mess, the filter will still be stuck, and youll be even more frustrated.

How to Remove a Stuck Oil Filter

Oil Filter Remover

To remove a stuck filter, use a band-type wrench lined with coarse-grit, adhesive-backed sandpaper. You can also spray adhesive on the back of conventional sandpaper. Better yet, buy a filter wrench with coarse grit welded to the inside of the band.

6 Ways to Fix a Flickering Light Bulb

POV Man Adjusting Dimmer Switch

Check Basic Settings and Bulb Quality First

A flickering light bulb could be caused by any number of things. So, when you’re troubleshooting, start with the easy stuff and make sure you don’t overlook anything. Is the light switch turned to the on position? With some lights, especially those with in-line switches or roller-type switches, it can be difficult to tell for certain. Test out the switch and make sure it is working properly.

Then, do a cursory check of the bulb itself. Is it loose or rattling in the socket? You may have the wrong type of bulb, or it may not be screwed in all the way. This is also a good time to take out the bulb and give it the shake test. Many incandescent bulbs will make a light tinkle sound while still alive. However, a deeper, more obvious tinkle indicates the bulb has burnt out.

If it’s a clear incandescent bulb, you can look at the filament directly to see if it is broken. LED and fluorescent bulbs won’t rattle when they die, so this method has limited uses.

A Guide To Correctly Attaching a New Deck to A House

Out here on California’s Central Coast, it’s rare to find a house without a deck. If you don’t see one in the front of the house, it’s probably in the back, and many of them are attached to the house. That means that builders like my former employer, Are Dann, retired owner of Dann Construction, must be adept at connecting the deck to the building.

It is possible to make a freestanding deck that abuts the building and to run decking boards right up the siding, but that’s something you only need to do if the siding is faux brick, faux or real stone or some other material that doesn’t lend itself to making the connection. Most houses in Dann’s service area have wood, fiber cement or vinyl siding, though, which he says are easier to work with. “You can cut back the siding far enough to allow you to fasten a ledger board to the sheathing and to the building’s rim joist,” says Dann. “Then install flashing, repair the siding and get on with building the deck.”

Dann and I have worked together on several deck projects. Using the techniques I learned while working with him, I’ve built a few on my own and with the help of other workers. Ahead, you’ll find our pointers for attaching a deck to a house the right way.

Preparing a House for a New Deck

Guide To Correctly Attaching A New Deck To A House

In some cases, you might be replacing an old deck with a new one, and if so, it’s important to remove the old ledger board when you demolish the deck. After removing the old deck, you can determine if you can still use the house rim to support the new ledger board.

If the wall sheathing behind the rim looks good, you’re okay. But if the sheathing is rotten, it’s important to investigate further by removing the rotted areas and checking the house’s rim joist and wall framing to see if they’re rotten, too. Dann cautions not to be too eager to rip apart and replace moist or discolored wood because it may still be intact below the surface. Jam a screwdriver into the wood in several places, and if the screwdriver penetrates more than 1/4 in. or so, it’s replacement time. That can be a huge job, so you may want an experienced carpenter to help walk you through that process.

If the sheathing is intact, or there is no existing deck to worry about, you only need to map out the deck’s perimeter on the ground and mark the positions of the postholes for the deck supports. Before digging, don’t forget to call 811 to get a map of underground utilities on your property you don’t want to place a post directly over a sewer or cut through a pipe or wire when digging. Dann also recommends laying a plastic weed barrier, which also helps improve drainage.

How Decks Connect to Homes

Installing a ledger board is the most secure way to connect a deck to a house. That way, you’ll be using the solid structure of the house to support your deck. The ledger has the same dimensions as the rest of the deck joists, and it serves as a rim joist to support the joists running perpendicular to the wall.

Like the joists, the ledger should be made from pressure-treated wood to prevent rot. “A rotted ledger board is a disaster,” says Dann. “It compromises the stability of the entire deck, the rot often spreads to the building’s structure, and it’s difficult to replace without demolishing a significant portion of the deck.”

Attaching a Deck Ledger

Rather than attaching the ledger board to the siding, Dann typically cuts the siding back so he can attach the ledger to the sheathing. After cutting the ledger to the proper length, he attaches it with long fasteners that will go all the way through the sheathing and penetrate the building’s band joist.

“Don’t use nails,” he cautions. “They’ll pull out.” The old-school fastening method uses 1/2-in. galvanized lag screws, but most builders these days opt for 1/4-in. structural screws they can drive with an impact driver. Despite the smaller diameter, they are stronger and speed up the project. Local building codes usually regulate how many screws you need and where you should place them, so do your research before you start the project.

Proper Deck Height

The ledger board’s height determines the deck’s height, and to prevent water pooling and ice build-up, the deck surface should be an inch or two below the thresholds of the doors that open onto the deck. To determine the height of the ledger, add the thickness of the decking to this gap. For example, if you set the deck two inches below the door thresholds and you use 1 1/2-in. decking, place the ledger board 3-1/2 inches below the thresholds.

The height of the ledger board determines the lengths of the deck posts, which is why Dann always sets the ledger before cutting the posts. Once the ledger is in place, it’s easy to attach a line to the top, stretch it out to each post, level it with a line level and make marks. All he has to do is lower these marks by the width of the beams the posts support, and he can mark the cut lines on the posts.

Why Flashing is Important

Even if you leave a gap between the top of the deck and the door thresholds, water will still run off the ends of the decking and seep down along the siding. You must install flashing to prevent the ledger and the siding from rotting.

Dann installs metal Z-flashing (drip cap) over the entire length of the top of the ledger and tucks the vertical portion under the siding. When working with horizontal cladding, he removes cladding boards to expose the sheathing and installs new cladding directly over the flashing. He then custom-cuts and fits another strip of flashing to put over this drip cap and under doors to cover and protect remaining unflashed areas under door sills. Finally, he caulks the gap between the flashing and the bottom of door thresholds.

It’s good practice to also install Z-flashing behind the bottom of the ledger and over the siding below. This keeps water from wicking along the bottom of the ledger and getting behind the siding. To keep water from leaking behind the ends of the ledger, Dann leaves a 1/8-in. gap between the end of the ledger and the ends of the siding and fills it with high-quality exterior caulk.

FAQs

Do I need a permit to build a deck attached to my house?

Yes. Most decks require permits. The International Residential Code provides an exemption for a deck built less than 30 inches above the surrounding grade and with a total area of less than 200 square feet, but not if the deck is attached to the house. Be sure to obtain this permit before you start, or you might have to tear it down after completing all the work.

Will adding a deck increase the resale value of my home?

Generally, yes. The amount varies, but it’s generally in the neighborhood of 60 to 75 percent of the cost of building the deck. The actual bump in your home’s resale value depends on a number of factors, including the materials you use and the design of the deck. Climate is also a factor: A deck adds more value if the climate is warm enough for people to spend time outside using it.

Here’s How To Remove Hard Water Stains From Brick

Hard water stains are a pain to clean off brick. However, as much as you may want to put off the chore, they’re an unsightly blemish. So you’re better served cleaning them up. But hard water stains, especially those on bricks, are tricky to clean. They require a lot of scrubbing and specialized cleaners to get the job done right. Start by making sure you’ve got all your supplies handy, and some time set aside to knock the chore out.

How To Remove Hard Water Stains From Brick

What Are Hard Water Stains?

Hard water stains are the result of minerals in your water; the water evaporates and the buildup stays behind. They are generally composed of calcium carbonate. This means that youll need an acid-based cleaner to get rid of them. However, you cannot use just any acid-based cleaner; some of them will do more harm than good. For example, don’t use muriatic acid, because it can stain or bleach many colors of brick and cause aluminum window frames to corrode.

Break Out the Elbow Grease

Instead, several brick cleaners are available that, because of special buffers, work well without those problems. Your local brick dealer probably carries these products. But if not, companies like ProSoCo and Diedrich Technologies offer reputable exterior brick cleaner products so you can learn how to clean exterior brick.

When you clean the brick, remember that you are using an acid-based product and follow all precautions and directions carefully. Do not mix the cleaner with other cleaners or you run the risk of creating toxic gasses. And be sure to wear proper protective equipment while you’re prepping, cleaning, and finishing up.

After cleaning your brick, avoid some future headaches by sealing it with a siloxane or silane-based sealer (available from the same sources listed above). To find out more information on cleaning, visit the Brick Industry Association.

Funsicle Pool Review: We Just Found Your New Summer Staple

There are many ways to cool off during the hot summer months in the south. Old-school sprinklers, water pads, kiddie pools, you name itI’ve tried them all over the years. Having grown up in the heat and humidity, there isn’t a body of water (man-made or not) that I haven’t dipped my toes in to find some relief.

Now that I’ve got a backyard of my own, I knew it was time to invest in an above-ground pool. I wasn’t quite sold on the work that an in-ground pool would take (not to mention the financial investment) and I wanted something more than an inflatable pool that my dog would eventually destroy. So I landed on an above-ground pool. To be more specific, I chose the Funsicle Above-Ground Swimming Pool.

Read on for my fool Funscicle pool review.

What is the Funsicle Above-Ground Pool?

The Funsicle Above-Ground Pool is (as the name states) an above-ground pool offering potential buyers a cheaper alternative to the work, space and financial investment required by an in-ground pool.

Unlike visiting a community pool, Funsicle above-ground pool owners get the privacy of enjoying the relaxation in the comfort of their own yard. Just one payment and you can have a pool party any time of the year with anyone you wantno need to worry about crowds or feeling uncomfortable in a swimsuit in front of strangers.

There are two sizes to this product and I decided on the smaller size because I didn’t want my entire yard to be taken up by the pool. I wanted a place for friends and family to come and relax so with the ability to accommodate up to seven people comfortably, the 14-inch diameter was more than enough room.

How We Tested It

Unboxing and Ground Prep

When the pool was delivered, it was a large, very heavy box. Inside were several smaller boxes with the individual components and their instruction manuals. I was pleasantly surprised at the sturdiness of the exterior poles and the vivid color of the inside liner.

The ground liner is noticeably thinner than the pool itself, so buyers should do a thorough job of clearing and preparing the ground before setting up the pool. I haven’t yet had any rips or tears in the pool, but it has only been a couple of months. There are two patches for repairs if I ever need them.

Here’s an important reminder: Please, please prepare your ground beforehand. I set this pool up with little to no regard for the slope of my backyard, and while minimal, I currently have a deep and a shallow end to the pool. I have set up the ladder at the shallow end for convenience but next summer I will need to drain and adjust the placement of the pool. I didn’t want to waste the water that I had already put in.

Assembly

While the pool did require some help to assemble, it was easy enough with two people. There is a simple snap-and-lock feature on the frame that makes it easy to assemble and disassemble. I would highly recommend at least two people!

While I was putting this together, I was hesitant to continue after I laid out the ground cover, which is essentially a tarp. It’s quite thin so next season, I’ll probably rethink the cover and may need to build a deck or some sort of flat surface that isn’t directly on the ground. The bars that make up the frame are metal but the feet they go into to help stay sturdy are plastic. The inside of the pool itself is a sleek vinyl-like material and the outside is printed to give the appearance of teak. There are several different outside prints available on the Funsicle website, including stone slate, rattan and solid grey.

Filling Up

I did get in and out of the empty pool several times before filling it up. Before I filled the pool, it rained for several days so I had to put the manual skimmer and drainage valve to the test. They both work! The drainage plug will get clogged if you allow too much debris into your pool so regardless of how much manual skimming you do, you may need to go back in and wipe down the plug. Learn from my lesson do not get into the slightly wet pool with no shoes on. The interior liner is very slippery and I may have busted my hip while trying to clean.

Please note that the skimmer pump is located at the top of the pool, so you must have the pool all the way filled for it to begin working. Also, when setting up the pool, the instruction manual strongly suggested the pool be at least 20 feet away from your house. However, there is an electrical component to the skimmeras in, it only will run if it’s plugged inso please be aware that you should place the pump as close to an electrical outlet as possible. I was not aware of this when I set it up so I needed to run an extension cord to connect to the outdoor outlets of my house.

Swimming

Now for the fun partswimming. Now, I just need to snag some fun pool accessories and I’ll be good to go! Living in the south means that I have lots of warm days during the summer, so the water naturally heats up in the sunshine. If I didn’t live in a place that had many days in the 90s during the summer months, I would probably be investing in a solar-powered water heater (as those first few dips required some major acclimatization).

Fhma24 Funsicle Pool Review Stacey K Robison Ssedit 01

I think my Funsicle pool review will be complete after a solid season of using the pool, but so far I have only had issues with the cover. It seems quite flimsy and is hard to keep tight on the pool. Summer in the south does include lots of storms so any kind of rain or wind blows the cover right off, even with the drawstring feature.

Pros

  • Includes filter system, manual cleaning kit, and clear assembly directions
  • Easy assembly
  • Bright interior color and stylish exterior
  • Cheaper than an inground pool
  • Can use year-round
  • You can take this wherever you move toit can be torn down, moved, and rebuilt

Cons

  • Flooring seems a little thin even with the ground liner. so repairs may need to be more frequent if the land is not prepared properly
  • Included cover requires two people to put on; does not stay on through wind or rain

FAQ

Who makes Funsicle?

Funsicle is owned by Polygroup. The company owns several seasonal brands, specifically based around winter holiday decor.

How long does it take to fill up a Funsicle pool?

Depending on the water input and the size of the pool that is purchased, it can take up to a full day to fill. The 14-inch diameter pool can hold up to just over 3.3k gallons of water and took nearly six hours to fill with a steady flow of water from a standard lawn hose.

Is it safe to have an above-ground pool?

There is always a risk associated with pools, even when the swimmers can easily stand in the pool; and because these pools are typically in homeowner’s backyards, there are often fewer safety precautions followed. Please keep a close eye on children and pets near any above-ground (or inground) pool.

What Other Reviewers Have to Say

Overall, this pool does what it says it’s going to do. There’s a cute design for those wanting something less austere, a sturdy build to ensure longevity, and built-in cleaning mechanics and tools. Here are some other Funsicle Pool reviews:

“I think its a great pool, looks cute and easy to assemble no issues with leaks, the filter works great,” reviewer Jessica R. explains. “I did add a solar heater to warm the water, but everything that came with this pool is great! No complaints. And considering the price and everything that comes with it, its a great deal too.”

One review on the Funsicle website described it as “a pool in a box” and it is! Everything you need is delivered to your door. I think I’ll get a cute chlorine dispenser and depending on how long into the year I want to use it, perhaps a solar-powered water heater.

Funsicle Pool vs. Summer Waves Pool

The Funsicle Pool and the Summer Waves Pool are both owned by Polygroup. While very similar, there are several differences in these pools.

The Funsicle above-ground pools come with the maintenance set, ground cover, and a ladder, while the comparable Summer Waves pools only come with the ladder and you have to purchase the additional pieces. Both come with a repair patch. The interior design is similar yet slightly differentthe Funsicle features a vertical hexagon and the Summer Wave features a square tile.

One major difference is that the Funsicle pools do not come with a chlorinator but the Summer waves do.

Final Verdict

Overall, I think this is a great splash pool for the price. I’m hopeful that the durability means it will last me for several seasons. The thick material of the liner, the ease of assembly (and therefore disassembly), the positive reviews from other purchasers, and the reputability of the brand all confirm that this was a worthwhile purchase.

As a woman in her mid-thirties, this is the perfect setup in my backyard for friends and family to come and relax during the summer months. I’ve even gotten a few inquiries from my neighbor about when she can come over to hang out.

Can You Get Rid of Weeds with Weed Burners?

First used in the 1930s to keep weeds down along many of America’s new roads, propane torches have found a permanent place among organic farmers as a chemical-free way to manage weeds. Today, many homeowners are drawn to this weeding method, which requires little physical effort and time. “Flame weeding can be an effective alternative,” Garrett Poshusta from The Grit and Polish says.

After years of pulling, spraying and cursing the weeds on my property, I’ve finally switched to burning weeds with propane and could not be happier with my decision. Ahead, learn all about weed torches with pro tips from Poshusta and Tim Thompson from YouTube’s Farm Learning with Tim Thompson.

What Is a Weed Torch?

A weed torch consists of a long wand with a handle on one end and a burner cylinder head on the other. The wand is connected to a liquid propane source and ignites at the burner head. This generates an intense, concentrated heat that is then directed at weeds, killing green growth.

Weed torches come in different styles for various applications. There are single-head torches meant for smaller jobs and multi-head set-ups for large agricultural fields. Wands can have straight or curved handles. Poshusta finds curved wands more comfortable to use.

How much does a weed torch cost?

Expect to pay between $30 to $250 for a residential weed torch. Small torches that produce lower temperatures will fall on the lower end of the price range, while larger torches with a full-size propane tank and mobility system will cost much more.

Does Torching Weeds Work?

Yes, burning weeds with propane can be part of an effective management plan. The torches easily kill the green growth on weeds, but sometimes leave the root system intact. Hardier perennial and woody weeds can regrow from undisturbed root systems. “Repeated applications are necessary,” Thompson says, “but eventually, the roots will become depleted and die due to continued heat treatment.”

Weed torches are most effective at quickly killing annual weeds two to three inches tall. “Torching is most effective on small weeds with small roots,” Poshusta says. “So frequent, low-intensity application will give the best results.”

Is it Safe to Burn Weeds?

Yes, but certain precautions should be taken.

Weed torches can reach temperatures of 2000 to 2250 degrees Fahrenheit. To prevent burns, always face the torch head away from you when lighting and using it. “Be aware of the direction of the flame when using the torch, and remember that the tip will remain hot for a period of time after use,” Thompson says. Always wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, gloves and close-toed shoes during use.

To avoid inadvertently starting a fire, don’t torch weeds during dry conditions or on a windy day. Always have a water source ready to extinguish any unwanted flames. Consider torching weeds after a soaking rain to avoid sparking a brush fire. “Make sure there are no burn bans active in your location and take precautions to avoid unintended fire spread,” Poshusta says.

How to Use a Weed Torch

Using a weed torch is relatively simple, but be sure to follow all manufacturer instructions carefully.

  • With all valves closed, connect the torch to the propane tank and slowly open the tank valve. Slightly open the torch valve and use a flint spark igniter to ignite the gas at the burner head. Adjust the flame size with the control knob on the torch.
  • Direct the burner head toward the weeds you’d like to remove, remaining 4 to 6 in. above the ground. Apply heat in a sweeping motion across the plants until they begin to wilt, then move on to the next area. “You don’t have to completely incinerate the leaves. Simply wilting them down is often sufficient,” Poshusta says.
  • Move slowly across the area, applying heat to all visible weeds. “The woodier the weeds, the slower you need to go,” Thompson says. To make it easier to use with larger propane tanks, use a tank cart to move the setup around your yard as you go.

Weed Torch Pros and Cons

Pros

A propane torch is a fast, low-effort method to kill weeds without the use of chemicals and herbicides. “The big two advantages of heat torches are the instant results (you can literally look back at yellowing weeds as you work) and the lack of toxic chemicals,” Thompson says.

Without the presence of chemicals or residue, once burned off, neighboring beneficial plants can quickly replace unwanted weeds. This method also avoids damaging nearby plants with herbicide overspray.

“[Weed torches] are particularly useful around patios, sidewalks and other hardscape or gravel surfaces since these don’t burn,” Poshusta says. Weeds that sprout in cracks and driveways are notoriously difficult to pull can also be easily managed with a propane torch.

Cons

While a great tool for managing weeds, burning weeds with propane can cause fires if not used correctly or in overly dry, windy conditions. “You need to be careful not to use it on fire danger days,” Thompson says.

While fast and effective, killing weeds for good with a propane torch often takes several treatments.

Additionally, Poshusta points out that while this method avoids using chemical herbicides, it does require burning fossil fuel. “It also doesn’t work well when weeds are in close proximity to other plants you want to keep,” he says.

FAQs

Do weed torches kill the roots?

It depends. “Different types of weeds may respond differently to being burned. Some will die off completely and others will grow back from the roots and require another round,” Poshusta says.

Is it legal to use a propane torch?

The legality of burning weeds with propane can vary depending on local and state regulations. Always check your local laws and regulations before purchasing and using a weed torch.

Does Irish Spring Soap Really Keep Mosquitoes Away? Experts Weigh In

side by side of irish spring soap and a black fly

With summer outdoor activities in full swing, everyone’s looking for ways to keep mosquitoes, flies and other pests at bay and Irish Spring soap is a perennial trending solution. In this YouTube video, the host places a bar on the porch, rubs it on doors and tables, puts grated flakes in various locations and dissolves it in water to spray plants and her own skin.

We contacted four experts to answer the question: Does Irish Spring soap keep mosquitoes and flies away?

Why Might The Irish Spring Soap Hack Work?

Mosquitoes and flies are incredibly sensitive to odors, like carbon dioxide and components in sweat and body heat, since that’s how female mosquitoes locate hosts for a meal, says Dr. Louisa Messenger, Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Instead of repelling bugs, when soaps and creams seem to work as a defense, most likely they are briefly just altering our skin microbiome, changing the way we smell.

“It means these soaps, creams and lotions will not function in the same manner for everyone and will not also cause the same effect consistently, since our skin microorganisms are constantly changing,” she says.

Does Irish Spring Soap Really Keep Mosquitoes Away?

Considering Irish Spring soap is a potent-smelling soap, there’s theoretically reason to believe you could use it to repel bugs. The question is: does it really work? The experts say not really.

“There is no scientific evidence,” says David Price, an entomologist at Mosquito Joe. Some soaps with essential oils can repel insects for a short time but, “Irish Spring soap specifically doesn’t have enough quantity to register for mosquitoes [and] no ingredients that would repel flies,” he says.

That being said, the strong scent of Irish Spring may have some repellent properties if placed in certain areas, “just like how citronella candles technically repel mosquitoes flying in the immediate air column above the candle,” says Emma Grace Crumbley, and entomologist with Mosquito Squad. But more research would need to be done to prove that, along with what might be the most effective uses.

Breaking Down the Video: Does Irish Spring Soap Keep Mosquitoes Away

Does putting Irish Spring soap on the porch repel mosquitoes?

Nope. Even if the scent were to repel insects, “the potency will not be direct enough to repel flying bugs,” says Crumbley.

Does rubbing Irish Spring soap on the door repel mosquitoes?

Nope. “The thing that stops flies from coming through the door is the door,” says Crumbley. “Rubbing soap on would not be as aromatic. Maybe a door frame made of soap would work.”

Does rubbing Irish Spring soap around your table repel mosquitoes?

Again, the soap is not aromatic enough. “This may be more repellent than a citronella candle in the middle of the table, since the soap covers more surface area. [Or] maybe fewer flies come over because you’re sitting at the table, not because of the soap,” says Crumbley.

Does Irish Spring soap in a jar repel mosquitoes and flies?

“[Irish Spring soap in a jar] is a worse version of a citronella candle,” says Crumbley. “Unless the flies are in the jar with the soap, no scent is emitted that the flies would detect. The only pros to this hack are that it’s one of the cleanest ones in the video, with very little mess left behind.”

Do Irish Spring soap shavings in the trash mosquitoes and flies?

“This could have a repellent effect, specifically on flies looking for nearby trash,” says Crumbley. “Putting the soap in the garbage also protects it from environmental factors like rain and sunlight, potentially making the soap’s potency last longer.”

Do Irish Spring soap shavings in the grass/on the windowsill repel mosquitoes?

“You’ll need a lot of soap shavings to cover that property,” says Crumbley. “Additionally, soap lying in direct sunlight can lose potency over time and leech into the soil, possibly harming plants, or melt onto the windowsill, leaving behind green gunk everywhere.”

Will an Irish Spring soap and water mixture repel mosquitoes?

Even if spraying Irish Spring soap on plants did work to repel bugs, it’s not recommended. Covering plants and soil life with soap can damage both, says Emily May, a pollinator conservation specialist at The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. Dish and hand soaps “can be phytotoxic, disrupting plant cell membranes and weakening plant defenses. Soaps can also be toxic to a variety of soft-bodied invertebrates, including caterpillars and earthworms, as well as soil microbes,” she says.

Some horticulturalists recommend spraying soapy water to deter garden pests like aphids and mites. However, if you must do that, use castile soap, not detergents or deodorant soaps like Irish Spring.

Does spraying an Irish Spring soap and water mixture on your skin repel mosquitoes?

Spraying Irish Spring soap on your skin could potentially work to repel mosquitoes. “It would temporarily mask indicators for mosquitos, however a DEET product is best,” says Price. Once it dries, it also sounds like a recipe for itchy skin.

What Are Better Ways to Keep Pesky Insects Away?

“Instead of spending my time and money rubbing my house down with soap, I would instead invest in some EPA approved repellent,” says Messenger. “There are plenty of over-the-counter products that can provide hours of protection and are backed up by robust, producible scientific data.”

Also, prevention is key, say May and Crumbley. Regularly check for and remove standing water, don’t overwater lawns, put a fan on your outdoor table and add screens to your doors and porches.
