What is the 2020 Color of the Year?
Pantone just announced its “Color of the Year” for 2020, and it’s already a classic—”Classic Blue,” that is.
Pantone 19-4052 “Classic Blue” is officially the 2020 Color of the Year, replacing 2019’s color, 16-1546 “Living Coral”. Pantone gave many reasons for the color’s selection, citing its “deep resonance,” “elegance” and “timelessness.” “Classic Blue” offers a stable foundation for home decoration that can be “easily applied across so many different materials, textures and finishes.”
“The Pantone Color of the Year highlights the relationship between trends in color and what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time, a color that reflects what individuals feel they need that color can hope to answer,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions, designers and brands should feel inspired to use color to engage and connect.”
A major part of Pantone’s decision to make “Classic Blue” the specific hue they think will best represent 2020 is the color’s peaceful and “reflective” tone. In their announcement the company repeatedly calls out a need for stability and tranquility in the year to come, and they believe that Classic Blue is the tone that best lends itself to that.
“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” said Leatrice Eisman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
The Pantone Color Institute has named a Color of the Year every year since 2000. The very first Color of the Year was Cerulean Blue, which also represented the need for stability at the turn of the millennium. Pantone hopes that the “Classic Blue” color will bring that same kind of stability as the world heads into this brand new decade.
